Twitter announced a new anti-misinformation initiative. The plan is to use a transparent community-based approach to identifying misinformation. This is a pilot program restricted to the United States.

I have almost twenty years of experience moderating and running forums. In my experience, community administrators identify trustworthy members and make them moderators, allowing the volunteer members to help run the community themselves.

In a healthy community, moderators do not function like police who are enforcing rules. In a well-operated community moderators are more like servants that help the community function better.

What Twitter is proposing falls short of true moderation. It’s more of an attempt to provide trustworthy feedback on problematic posts that contain misinformation.

Apple Announces More Powerful 8

Apple has announced today that it is upgrading the MacBook Pro with faster 8th- and 9th-generation Intel Core processors. This revision marks the first time that the MacBook Pro has been available in an 8-core configuration. The new MacBook Pro models also feature a revised keyboard design.

The new 8-core MacBook Pros deliver two times faster performance than a quad-core MacBook Pro and 40 percent more performance than a 6-core MacBook Pro.

“Whether it’s college students mastering a course of study, developers building world-class apps or video editors creating feature films, we’re constantly amazed at what our customers do with their MacBook Pro,” said Tom Boger, Apple’s senior director of Mac Product Marketing.

“Now with 8-core processors for an incredible performance boost, along with its stunning Retina display, fast storage, all-day battery life and running macOS, MacBook Pro continues to be the world’s best pro notebook and we can’t wait to get it into our customer’s hands to see what they do next.”

In addition to the faster processors, Apple says the new MacBook Pros feature a new iteration of its Butterfly keyboard technology. Apple is including the new keyboard on the new 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pros released today. Apple didn’t offer any details on whether or not the new keyboard design would also make its way to other Butterfly keyboard Macs, such as the MacBook Air.

Apple says that it is using “new materials” in the switch mechanism that should significantly reduce the occurrence of double and missed key presses. It will ship on the new MacBook Pro 15-inch and MacBook Pro 13-inch with Touch Bar that it just announced.

The company had no announcements on whether it would use this “new material” on other MacBooks it sells going forward.

This is Apple’s fourth butterfly keyboard revision. With the 2023 MacBook line, Apple included new silicone guards in an attempt to mitigate the many problems users were facing with the keyboard design. Amazon and Intel team up against Google in IoT

Amazon and Intel are teaming up to spread Alexa, with stronger voice control skills as well as faster ways for third-parties to build devices with the assistant baked in. The news, announced at Amazon’s AWS-focused re:Invent conference this week, sees Intel renew its efforts to get its silicon into places where, traditionally at least, you might expect to find ARM-based processors. However it’s also a big deal to Amazon, which faces stronger competition from Google and others in the smart home.

Their plan is fairly straightforward. On the one hand, it’s about making Alexa more capable, with Intel adding Alexa skills support to its Smart Home Hub platform. That means voice control over connected devices like lighting, locks, appliances, and other technologies.

It’s something Alexa can do in part today, using the integrations with Philips’ Hue lighting, SmartThings’ hub, and other devices, but Amazon and Intel are aiming to make it a whole lot more streamlined. That’ll begin from the point of setup, where Alexa will be able to guide users through installation and connection of Internet of Things (IoT) gadgets by voice, but also extend to everyday use. “This will allow end users to interact more naturally with the technology in their homes,” Ted Karczewski, Alexa Voice Services content marketing manager at Amazon, says of the partnership.

However, the second phase is about putting Alexa into more places, and making it easier for third-party device manufacturers to get up and running with Amazon’s virtual assistant. The two firms are cooking up a reference design for smart speakers, effectively a blueprint for the various hardware elements a successful Echo-like unit would include. That includes speakers and microphone arrays, so as to enable successful voice recognition from a distance.

It also covers the array of radios and wireless standards required in the current, fairly fragmented smart home. Along with WiFi and Bluetooth, there’ll be support for ZigBee and Z-Wave, which are both widely used by connected devices for their low power requirements and mesh networking support. Intel’s design would include sufficient flexibility that manufacturers building products based on the reference could add various sensors for monitoring environmental conditions, together with video if they see fit.

Meanwhile, there’ll be extended support for the Alexa SDK which allows existing connected devices to be linked in with Amazon’s cloud-based processing. According to the firms, the first reference design will be available in the first quarter of 2023.

What’s interesting is that, even as Amazon looks to extend its reach into third-party hardware, it’s also reportedly looking to push the boundaries on its own range. While the 2nd-generation Echo Dot effectively took the original Echo and shrank it down – both in terms of physical size and the device’s price – leaks suggest Amazon is also investigating ways of augmenting voice-alone on future products. A new model is rumored to include a display for giving visual feedback in addition to spoken results.

Whether that will be sufficient to give Amazon an edge as Google pushes its own assistant and Google Home remains to be seen. The air-freshener-esque Google Home doesn’t have a display of its own, but it can tap into screens in the house that have been equipped with Chromecast dongles. Amazon is yet to do something similar with its own Fire TV Stick, though the latest iteration of that does have some Alexa control using a microphone on the Bluetooth remote.


Google Joins The Fight Against Passwords By Enabling Passkeys

The passwordless future is slowly becoming a reality. This week, Google announced that you can now log into your Google account with just a passkey. It’s a huge milestone in what promises to be the incredibly long, awkward move away from using passwords for security. 

In case you haven’t heard yet, passwords are terrible. People pick awful passwords to begin with, find them really hard to remember, and then don’t even use them properly. When someone gets hacked, that may just involve someone using (or reusing) a really bad password or accidentally giving it to a scammer. To try to solve these difficult problems, an industry group—including Apple, Google, and Microsoft—called the FIDO Alliance developed a system called passkeys. 

Passkeys are built using what’s called the WebAuthentication (or WebAuthn) standard and public-key cryptography. It’s similar to how end-to-end encrypted messaging apps work. Instead of you creating a password, your device generates a unique pair of mathematically related keys. One of them, the public key, is stored by the service on its server. The other, the private key, is kept securely on your device, ideally locked behind your biometric data (like your fingerprint or face scan), though the system also supports PINs.

Because the keys are mathematically related, the website or app can get your device to verify that you have the matching private key and issue a one-time login without ever actually knowing what your private key is. This means that account details can’t be stolen or phished and, since you don’t have to remember anything, logging in is simple. 

Take Google’s recent implementation. Once you’ve set up a passkey, you will be able to log into your Google account just by entering your email address and scanning your fingerprint or face. It feels similar to how built-in password managers work, though without any password in the mix. 

Of course, passkeys are still a work in progress, and implementations are inconsistent. As ArsTechnica points out, passkeys currently sync using your operating system ecosystem. Right now, if you exclusively use Apple devices, things are pretty okay. Your passkeys will sync between your iPhone, iPad, and Mac using iCloud. For everyone else though, they’re a mess. If you create a passkey on your Android smartphone, it will sync to your other Android devices, but not your Windows computer or even your Chrome browser. There are workarounds using tools like QR codes, but it’s a far cry from the easy password-sharing built into most browsers.

Also, passkeys aren’t very widely supported yet. Different operating systems support them to various degrees and there currently are just 41 apps and services that allow you to use them to login. Google joining the list is a huge deal, in part because of how many services rely on Sign In With Google.

Password managers have become a good tool for managing complex, unique passwords across different devices and operating systems. These same password managers, like Dashlane and 1Password, are working to solve the syncing issues currently baked into passkeys. In a statement to PopSci, 1Password CEO Jeff Shiner said, “Passkeys are the first authentication method that removes human error—delivering security and ease of use… In order to be widely adopted though, users need the ability to choose where and when they want to use passkeys so they can easily switch between ecosystems… This is a tipping point for passkeys and making the online world safe.”
