Twitter is improving the way it keeps users informed about trending topics via a collaboration with The Associated Press (AP) and Reuters.
Teaming up with AP and Reuters will allow Twitter to increase the scale and speed at which it provides context to popular topics of conversation.
Currently, Twitter explains top trends on a limited scale. This is accomplished by attaching additional information to the trend such as a Twitter Moment, a single tweet, or a written description.
Twitter aims to bolster the delivery of this information in a few key ways:
Scale: Users can expect to see more contextual descriptions about Twitter trends going forward.
Speed: Information about popular topics of conversation will be provided in real-time as they emerge.
Accuracy: This collaboration will make it possible for Twitter to deliver accurate information when facts are in dispute.
Trustworthiness: Links to reports from trusted sources will be provided more frequently.
In addition, Twitter will attempt to provide information about topics before they go viral.
“Rather than waiting until something goes viral, Twitter will contextualize developing discourse at pace with or in anticipation of the public conversation.”
Twitter first rolled out explanations for trending topics back in September 2023. While helpful at times, they’re not displayed for all trends and they certainly don’t appear in real-time.
The issues with speed and scale are getting addressed by the AP & Reuters collaboration, as is another thing Twitter needs help with — factchecking.
A lot of work goes into factchecking viral web content, and Twitter doesn’t have the resources to do it internally. Even Facebook outsources its factchecking.
Currently it’s Twitter’s curation team who is responsible for adding explanations to trending topics, and they don’t have the expertise of investigative journalists.
During this initial phase of the program, AP and Reuters will focus on English-language content.
Twitter says these efforts will grow over time to provide support across languages and timezones around the world.
“We are committed to making sure that when people come to Twitter to see what’s happening, they are able to easily find reliable information. Twitter will be able to expand the scale and increase the speed of our efforts to provide timely, authoritative context across the wide range of global topics and conversations that happen on Twitter every day.”

Google did something both inevitable and unexpected this week: They announced the integration of Google+ into Google Search.
That’s the inevitable part. They call the new feature Search plus Your World.
The unexpected part is that Google gives easy controls for turning off the social features. Two new buttons appear to the right of search results. One turns “Your World” on, and the other turns it off.
When I search for my own name on the new Google Search, the first result is a link to my Google+ profile.
(Note that the new social integration is available only to English-language users for now, and is still being rolled out. You may not have it yet.)
All four are captioned with “You.” The reason is that I’m logged in with my universal Google username and password, and I’ve been tagged in the pictures. Google knows who I am, and knows who’s in the pictures. It also knows who’s granted what permissions on Google+. And that’s what “Search plus Your World” does. It shows you what Google knows you have permission to see, and favors what Google believes are content sources you’re close to.
While the ill-informed may experience an emotional reaction at first upon seeing private pictures in a space where they’re used to seeing only public ones, and charge invasion of privacy, actually the opposite is true.
So while Google plus Your World makes it easy for me to see which pictures of me are being shared on Google+, it does not tell me which pictures of me are being shared on Facebook. That’s a much harder thing to figure out.
By surfacing pictures of your self after an ego search, it becomes clearer than ever exactly which pictures are public and which are private. Ignorance about what’s being shared doesn’t increase privacy.
Critics charge that Google’s new social search option gives preferential treatment to Google+ over social rivals Twitter and Facebook and represents an example of a complaint now being explored by the FTC. The complaint is that Google favors its own services in search results.
The loudest critic to date has been Twitter. The company issued an angry statement this week blasting Google for “Your World.”
Twitter wrote (in a post too long for Twitter, ironically): “We’re concerned that as a result of Google’s changes, finding this information will be much harder for everyone. We think that’s bad for people, publishers, news organizations and Twitter users.”
A prior agreement, which ended last year, enabled Google to offer Twitter results as Google’s “real-time search” feature.
Google says, in a nutshell, that Twitter social signals aren’t integrated as completely as Google+ data is because Twitter opted out. Twitter chose not to participate and actively blocks Google from integrating the information in Google Search results.
It’s unknowable how accurate Google’s position is.
That the two companies failed to agree on Twitter integration doesn’t mean Twitter was unreasonable in its negotiations. Maybe Google was unreasonable. This is a judgment call most of us aren’t in a position to make.
This is the under-appreciated controversy of this whole mess.
It’s not that Google is using the exclusive social signals of its own Google+ social network, and excluding others, as critics charge.
And it’s not that Twitter has decided to opt out of Google Search results, as Google claims.
The truth is that the companies failed to agree on the terms of a business deal that would have fully integrated Twitter into Search results.
Linux is no stranger to Windows. In the past we’ve reported on how Linux was implemented into Windows 10. Recently, Microsoft has gone the additional step and announced an update for the implementation of a whole Linux kernel to the operating system. If you’re looking to run a full Linux desktop on Windows, you’ll be disappointed with this update! While you’ll be able to run Linux in this update, it won’t be like a virtual machine. However, if you want to run specific Linux tools within Windows itself, you’ll probably find WSL2 a worthwhile addition.Is This a Sign of Windows Fighting Linux?
When we last touched upon this topic, we asked the question if it was a sign that Windows was trying to eliminate Linux — or at least`1 combat it. At the time it felt like Windows was taking a prod at Linux; now, with this entire kernel custom-made by Microsoft themselves, this feeling is stronger than ever.
By implementing a kernel into Windows 10, Microsoft is probably hoping to stop people dual-booting with Linux. Why swap between Windows and Linux when you can just do everything on WSL2? It’s a convenient way for someone to use Linux tools within Windows without the need of a VM or dual-boot.
However – much like we said last time – this change is unlikely to convert any Linux users into Windows. Linux users have more of a problem with Windows 10 itself and are unlikely to install Windows 10 over their favorite distro. In fact, with the recent Windows update facade, Linux users are probably far and away from adopting Windows 10!Kernel Panic
With Windows 10 opening up to Linux, the next update will contain an entire custom-made kernel. While it’s not a full-blown distro, it is a useful tool for running Linux tools in Windows – even if some Linux users feel as if Microsoft is trying to combat the OS.

We are getting a major update to Apple’s free iOS music production suite today. GarageBand was already considered to be one of, if not the best, DAW’s available to mobile music makers, and now it’s getting even better. With today’s update, Apple is focusing almost solely on content and we couldn’t be happier. While there are enhancements and minor improvements across the board here, it’s all about new sounds, instruments, beat creation and making sure it all fits perfectly on the edge-to-edge iPhone X Super Retina display.
We’ve had some time to play with all the new features as well as some hands-on time with the new Moog Model 15 synth AU integration. Head below for more details on everything new to GarageBand 2.3 for iOS…
We can essentially break down today’s update into 4 main parts: the new Sound Library, Touch Instruments, Drummers and the Beat Sequencer.
Apple has a brand new Sound Library for iOS GarageBand users with today’s update (pictured on the iPad in the image above). As you might expect, this is where you’ll find all the new content add-ons, which come in what you might consider themed bundles.
Apple wanted to make the Sound Library because they always get requests for more and more sounds and content packs, but they want to also be respectful of new users and keep the download size of the main app from getting too bloated. This will allow them to add a ton of new content for users throughout the year between major updates, without increasing the size of the stock GarageBand app on the App Store.
You’ll find sound packs of content consisting of everything from drum kits and Apple Loops, to completely new Touch Instruments and various presets. All for free. There are audio previews available so you can check them out before downloading and you can use the Sound Library to remove, delete and re-download a given sound pack at any time. The UI for the library borrows from Apple’s other apps and will be very familiar to App Store/iTunes users.
The feature taps into all of Apple’s stock drummer and drum kit patches, but you can also hit up the new Sound Library for 10 additional kits you can use in Beat Sequencer.
As we mentioned above we are getting some new Touch Instruments for GarageBand on iOS you’ll find conveniently placed inside the new Sound Library. More specifically a trio of multi-touch instruments in the form of a Japanese Koto and a Taiko drum kit as well as an “authentic” Chinese Guzheng join the lineup in this release. All three of which sounded quite nice to me, particularly when it came to making use of the touch interface with gestural strums and things of that nature on the stringed instruments. Just remember they are by default running in their traditional pentatonic tunings, so you might need to tap the scales menu to grab something more suitable for your project.
GarageBand for iOS is now getting the three new Drummers the Mac version got back in the summer. Those being Pop, Songwriter, and Latin-based percussion grooves along with 3 new corresponding kits: Studio, Latin and Coffee Shop. Once again, just pop into the new Sound Library to download them all from the Percussionists pack.
We also got to test run the new Moog Model 15 synth AU for GarageBand on iOS. As amazing as Inter-app audio and MIDI can be, there’s nothing like being able to load up high quality third-party instruments and gear directly into your DAW of choice. GarageBand was already great, but it is clearly getting better and better by the day.
The Logic Pros are: Justin Kahn and Jordan Kahn, who also front Toronto-based electronic/hip-hop group Makamachine.
