Suggested March 2024 Should Id Be Required To Purchase Pre
On 22 March 2024, a group of individuals in Brussels set off a number of explosions inside the city’s airport and the Maalbeek metro station. Shortly after the attacks, the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) reported that the terrorists used Romanian prepaid SIM cards to communicate. Romania’s Prime minister has announced that the government will be debating a new law requiring the presentation of identification before purchasing prepaid cards. On the other side of the world, on March 25th, a new bill entered the U.S. Congress with a similar measure. The question very few people are asking is whether this is actually an effective method to stop criminal elements from communicating with one another. The Aim of Requiring ID
The reason why successful crimes are successful is because of the anonymity of the criminal. Requiring a form of identification to purchase prepaid SIM cards threatens that aspect of anonymity for people who need “burner phones.” This theoretically makes it more difficult to perform some criminal acts and impossible to perform others. This measure as it is proposed in various countries aims to stop not only terrorism, but also drug dealing, prostitution, and various other illegal activities. Why It Doesn’t Do Much
Requiring people to present an ID in order to purchase a prepaid SIM is useless without a present surveillance infrastructure. It doesn’t stop criminals from talking to each other, nor does it make what you say on the phone immediately attachable to you.
Someone could theoretically use the argument that they have given their phone to a stranger or that their phone was stolen, thereby absolving them of accusation under the law and presenting reasonable doubt as to the guilt of an accused individual. Real criminals, nonetheless, aren’t above actually stealing someone else’s phone, stealing another person’s identity, or otherwise faking their identity to get around this requirement. In the case of Romania, terrorists can simply purchase prepaid SIM cards from another country.
The one effect that requiring ID for prepaid SIM purchases will certainly have is the reduction of intimacy of the everyday law-abiding citizen. Although criminals do use burner phones to anonymize their conversations, they aren’t the only people who may wish to be anonymous. In the case of the U.S., while one could argue that the first provision in the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution in the Bill of Rights applies only to searches and seizures in private property, any federal law requiring identification to purchase a prepaid SIM card would also violate “the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects.” The proposed requirement would certainly establish a precedent for more surveillance, especially if the nation proposing it has a solid infrastructure for cellular phone tapping. What Should Be Done?

The latest wrinkle in the Apple Maps fiasco has nothing to do with the iOS6 app being faulty, and everything to do with the app being too good. Last week, Turkey complained that Apple Maps jeopardizes its national security by clearly defining the layout of one of its highest security prisons. Now, Taiwan is asking Apple to blur satellite images of a top-secret $1.2-billion radar site that are now available to any user running iOS 6 on an Apple device.
We’ve previously explored the changing landscape of mapping in the digital age, where cartographic data is freely available from various–and not necessarily consistent–sources. When we last explored this topic in-depth we examined how these maps’ inherent inaccuracies and inconsistencies can be a recipe for misunderstanding and, in some contexts, serious geopolitical problems. Now Apple Maps is forcing us to face the other side of that coin. App functionality issues aside, Apple is providing map imagery that is absolutely crystal clear, revealing points of interest on Earth’s topography that some governments and entities would much rather keep out of the public eye, forcing the App providers themselves to act as cartographic editors, choosing what to blur and what to leave unaltered for public consumption.
For Taiwan, that point of interest is a top-secret radar base that supplied by Raytheon that is designed to give the Taiwanese up to two extra minutes of warning in the case of a Chinese missile attack on the island (China is rumored to have more than 1,500 ballistic missiles pointed at Taiwan, which it views as a breakaway province of the People’s Republic rather than an independent, sovereign state). Taiwan sees this installation as essential to its defense, and it would rather not reveal the exact locations and orientations of its billion-dollar facilities to any Chinese nationalist with a smartphone. Taiwan has requested that Apple blur this part of the map and is awaiting a response.
In one respect, you could call this a win for global transparency. But from another perspective, it’s a serious security problem. And it again raises the question: who, if anyone, should act as overseer of our digital maps?
The answer to this question isn’t as easy as it might seem. In this particular case, a given person’s answer might be colored by how he or she feels about simmering tensions between Taiwan and China. Or it might be easier to simply say that all satellite imagery should be, unequivocally, presented as-is, free from manipulation or any subjective editing. But consider: Just today we’ve learned that Bing maps has revealed the site of a CIA training facility in North Carolina modeled on Osama bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. This picture is old–we’re not exactly sure how old, but it clearly predates the May 2011 raid on OBL’s hideout–as the image captures the training facility under construction. And a more recent image of that site displayed on Google Maps show that it has since been torn down.
That tells us two things: Google apparently has more up-to-date maps than Bing, and had some meticulous Al Qaeda underling been cruising the major map-making services to see what was going on at known or suspected CIA training sites, and had that image been public at the time, the CIA’s hand could’ve been tipped and bin Laden could’ve walked. That may seem like an extreme example, but further examples abound, ranging from NATO airbases to Aberdeen Proving Ground, America’s oldest experimental military test range, in Maryland.
The actual imagery that Google, Apple, and Nokia use for their mapping applications comes from a variety of sources, and no single one is any more “correct” than the others. Geography dictates the shape of landmasses, and international treaties dictate the boundaries between states. But in its diligent reporting on this topic, The Verge has pointed out the really confusing aspect of all of this–that Google, Apple, and Nokia have in many instances furnished different maps, yet they largely draw their imagery from the same places. Says Aaron Souppouris at The Verge:
Perhaps the most confusing aspect of the present situation is that the three companies license satellite imagery from similar sources. Nokia counts Navteq, NavInfo, DigitalGlobe, and Planetary Vision among its providers, while Apple also uses DigitalGlobe’s images, and actually cites the company as the sole provider of its satellite imagery, although iOS 6’s 3D maps are from Apple-owned C3 Technologies (which, confusingly, Nokia also uses for its maps).
Google’s coverage comes from a vast network of suppliers, including DigitalGlobe, Terrametrics, and GeoEye. With DigitalGlobe on its list of partners, Google could, if it wanted to, provide its users with the same high-quality images Apple uses at the above sites. Although it says it has never blurred any images, purposefully choosing low-quality images for particular sites is practically the same thing.
It’s clear that Google is exercising some degree of editorial oversight when presenting its satellite imagery to the world, even if it claims that state actors don’t influence those decisions. But as the “map wars” continue–and they will–the question of whether this information should be free or whether states should have some means to influence what kind of imagery captured within their borders is broadcast on the Web. And before you dismiss this as a no-brainer (of course this information should flow freely, right?), these issues are the macro version of those that private citizens are going to have to face as technologies like unmanned aerial drones with surveillance capabilities proliferate. Apple Maps is peering in Taiwan’s bedroom window right now, and Taiwan is taking exception.
Perhaps that’s a bit of oversimplification, but as the responsibility of mapmaking shifts from state and international bodies to private sector companies (and further private companies that feed them satellite imagery), there’s a certain degree of power shifting hands as well. The new reality that the many facets of the Apple Maps disaster has forced us to face up to is this: we are absolutely dependent on our digital maps, but as the little people down here on the ground we have absolutely no control over them.
Police shouldn’t be able to search suspects’ mobile phones at the time of arrest because of the huge amounts of private information now stored on those devices, lawyers for two criminal defendants argued before U.S. Supreme Court Tuesday.
If the court allows uninhibited police searches of smartphones, it has “fundamentally changed the idea” that warrants are needed to search most personal effects, said Jeffrey Fisher, a lawyer representing David Riley, who was arrested on gang-related charges in San Diego in 2009. A smartphone potentially contains much more personal information than a suspect could carry in the predigital era, he said.
Several justices seemed to be sympathetic to the arguments for Riley, if not for Brima Wurie, a suspected drug dealer arrested in Boston in 2007.
The state of California’s position that police should be allowed wide latitude to search suspects’ mobile phones at the time of arrest opens up the possibility of privacy-invading searches of photographs, medical records, email, phone records and GPS records after arrests for minor infractions, said Justice Elena Kagan.
“A person can be arrested for anything,” she said. “A person can be arrested for driving without a seat belt.”
Other justices questioned why they should prohibit police from searching mobile phones, when they already can search a suspect’s wallet or cigarette pack. Under current case law, police could search a piece of paper in a suspect’s pocket that contains phone numbers, said Justice Samuel Alito. Is a phone the same as a wallet?
Kagan agreed. A search of a suspect’s smartphone has much broader privacy implications than “when people have pictures of their family in their billfolds,” she said.
In addition, police are becoming increasingly concerned about encryption on phones, Dreeben said. In some cases, if a smartphone is allowed to lock, it may be difficult for police to break the password or to defeat encryption on the phone, he said. “It may be months or years or never that they can break through the encryption,” he said.
When Fisher and Mizner argued that police shouldn’t be able to search mobile phones without a warrant unless there are so-called “exigent circumstances” such as immediate injury, some justices questioned how police could decide what amounts to an exigent circumstance. They also called on the court to allow only limited searches of phones through warrants, instead of allowing police to “rummage” through phones, as Mizner phrased it.
Chief Justice John Roberts questioned how a judge could determine what information on a phone was fair game. “What part of a smartphone is not likely to have potential evidence?” he asked. Two cases, one issue
The two cases have significant differences.
The picture of the car, along with ballistic tests connecting Riley to the earlier shooting, led police to charge him in the shooting. Riley’s lawyers tried to get the smartphone evidence thrown out, saying it violated the U.S. Constitution Fourth Amendment’s prohibition against unreasonable searches and seizures. A California court rejected that effort, and Riley was convinced on three charges, including shooting at an occupied vehicle.
In the second case, police observed what they suspected to be a drug deal and arrested suspect Wurie after he drove away from the scene. After Wurie arrived at the police station, police found a call log on his flip phone and traced a number designated as “my house.” After connecting that number to a street address, police obtained a warrant, searched the house and found crack cocaine, marijuana, a gun and ammunition.
Wurie’s lawyers filed a motion to suppress the evidence obtained through the warrantless search of his mobile phone, and a judge denied the motion. After Wurie was convicted on three counts, including intent to distribute and distributing cocaine base, the defendant appealed the case, and an appeals court threw out the conviction.

While it embraces humor and memes, Pepe Coin also strives to provide value and utility to its holders, making it a potential investment option for those seeking a mix of fun and financial gains.Balancing Love and Hate
Love Hate Inu enters the cryptocurrency scene with a distinctive concept, aiming to balance emotions and empower its holders. The coin represents the duality of love and hate, seeking harmony between opposing forces. Love Hate Inu combines utility and community engagement to create a unique investment opportunity.

A portion of the transaction fees is allocated to various charitable causes, making this cryptocurrency not only financially rewarding but also socially impactful. By investing in Love Hate Inu, individuals can contribute to positive change while potentially benefiting from its growing popularity and value.A Family-Bound Cryptocurrency
Dogetti (DETI) is more than just a cryptocurrency; it’s a concept built around the idea of unity and community. Inspired by mafia-themed books and films, Dogetti aims to create a strong and united community of holders known as “The Family.” By branding the community as a family, Dogetti fosters a sense of exclusivity and togetherness among its users and buyers. The main objective of the Dogetti project is to increase the overall net worth of every member of The Family.
Dogetti operates on a 2% reflection protocol, where holders are rewarded on a regular basis. This unique feature ensures that community members benefit directly from the success of the coin. Additionally, Dogetti introduces DogettiDAO and DogettiNFTs to further engage and empower its community. DogettiDAO allows The Family to actively participate in decision-making processes, making them an integral part of the ecosystem’s development.
As the crypto market continues to evolve, new coins with innovative concepts and utility emerge.
