Acer Predator Triton 500 Review: This Thin And Light Laptop Even Has Geforce Rtx

Acer’s Predator Triton 500 is a well-equipped gaming laptop we’d actually want to carry around. It’s thin and light for its class, and its Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 GPU will help you forget the mild shortcomings of its 8th-gen Core i7 CPU.

Acer’s Predator Triton 500 is a gaming laptop we’d actually want to carry around. Sure, we may look hungrily at a monster gaming laptop that’s nearly as fast as a desktop gaming PC. But if you have to take it with you, the era of thin, light and powerful gaming laptops is a godsend.

Adam Patrick Murray

The Acer Predator Triton 500 features an 8th gen Core i7-8750H and Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 GPU, along with 16GB of dual-channel RAM and a 512GB NVMe M.2 SSD.

Acer Predator Triton 500 Specs and Features

The Predator Triton 500 is one of the first gaming laptops we’ve tested with Nvidia’s RTX mobile chip. Even though its CPU is “merely” 8th-gen when 9th-gen CPUs have recently become available, that GPU matters a lot more when it comes to gaming. Here are the details:

CPU: Intel 8th-gen Core i7-8750H

Memory: 16GB DDR4/2666 in dual-channel mode

GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060

Display: 15.6-inch, 144Hz, 1920×1080 screen

Storage: 512GB NVMe SSD

Dimensions: 14 x 10 x 0.75 inches (without the feet)

Weight: 4.75 pounds, 5.9 pounds with AC adapter

The Predator Triton 500’s size and weight put it in the thin-and-light gaming category. Granted, it’s almost 12 ounces ounces heavier than, say, the original MSI GS65 Stealth we reviewed. However, MSI has since beefed up the original with newer components, and the latest version (which we’re still reviewing) weighs about 4.4 pounds.

The display is the standard-issue 15.6-inch, 1920×1080 resolution, 144Hz “IPS” panel seen in most thin and light gaming laptops. To aid in battery life, Acer also decided to skip G-sync, which means the GPU doesn’t have to be on at all times. G-sync is a proven drag on battery life in other laptops we’ve tested.

Ports

The Predator Triton 500’s port selection is good. The right side features two USB-A ports, a miniDisplayPort, and a Thunderbolt 3 port. The miniDisplayPort is plumbed directly to the GeForce RTX 2060, so even though the Predator Triton 500’s panel doesn’t support G-sync, you can run an external G-sync panel.

Adam Patrick Murray

You get two USB-A ports, a miniDisplayPort and Thunderbolt 3 on the right side of the Predator Triton 500.

Adam Patrick Murray

The back of the Predator Triton 500 is heavily vented and features beautiful anodized-blue cooling fins.

Keyboard and trackpad

The only real stickler for some is that the keyboard has three-zone lighting rather than per-key lighting. For the price Acer wants for this laptop, the competition gives you per-key lighting.

Adam Patrick Murray

The trackpad and keyboard are good, and we appreciate that Acer doesn’t go with compressed cursor keys. The only negative is the use of a three-zone RGB keyboard, when most of its direct competitors feature per-key RGB keyboards.

Upgrades: Not easy

You could upgrade the RAM or storage, but doing so would require removing ribbon cables and pulling the entire motherboard out of the system. To be fair, the vast majority of people never will attempt to crack open a gaming laptop, but we prefer designs that make any attempt easier.

Gordon Mah Ung

The Acer Predator Triton 500 uses an inverted motherboard design, which requires pulling the board out to get to the M.2 and RAM slots. You can at least swap out the WiFi module if you wanted though.

Acer Predator Triton 500 CPU Performance

There is a difference between the two generations of chip, but it depends on the workload. Overall, you’re looking at a 10- to 11-percent difference at most. In long-running, heavy tasks (such as gaming or video encoding), they’re more like dead even. (Keep in mind, we’re referring to the Core i7 chips. If you’re looking at 8th gen Core i9 vs. 9th gen Core i9, all bets are off.)

Don’t believe us? Check out our tests. The first is Maxon’s Cinebench R15, a medium-duty test. As you can see, the Predator Triton 500 holds its own against other 6-core Core i7 chips, but it lags the recently updated MSI GS65 with its Core i7-9750H by about 12 percent. That’s a decent amount, but we’re still not talking about more cores or new instruction sets.

IDG

The 9th gen Core i7-9750H has a minor performance bump over the 8th gen Core i7-8750H in shorter multi-threaded tasks.

When you move into single-threaded performance, the gap closes up quite a bit. We’re basically looking at a massive tie between most 8th-gen Core i7-8750H laptops and the newer 9th-gen Core i7-9750H, with about a 5-percent difference in performance.

IDG

In single-threaded tasks, it’s really one big cluster tie.

IDG

In a longer tasks, such as a 30-minute video encode, it’s pretty much a tie.

The upshot on CPU performance is that the Predator Triton 500’s 8th-gen CPU is a bit slower than its 9th-gen counterpart. But we’re not talking the huge leap we saw going from 7th-gen Kaby Lake laptops to 8th-gen Coffee Lake laptops.

Acer Predator Triton 500 Gaming Performance

The Predator Triton 500’s GPU may help you forget the mild shortcomings of its CPU. Inside we find none other than Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 2060 GPU. It’s essentially the same as the desktop GeForce RTX 2060, with lowered clock speeds and power consumption for laptops.

Because we were interested in the GPU itself, we first ran UL’s 3DMark Fire Strike test and recorded the graphics score. 3DMark is generally a pure GPU test, but by looking at only the graphics sub-score, we lock in on just graphics performance.

IDG

The GeForce RTX 2060 in the Acer Predator Triton 500 is sandwiched right between GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q and GeForce GTX 1070 laptops.

Some of this is likely related to the DX11 benchmark, though. We also ran 3DMark Time Spy on the laptop which uses DirectX 12 and uses a magnitude more modern graphics features.

When pushed harder with the newer features, the GeForce RTX 2060 in the Acer Predator Triton 500 closes up nearly even with the fastest GeForce GTX 1070 laptops, as well as the Radeon RX Vega 56 GPU in Acer’s Predator Helios 500.

IDG

When using the DX12 3DMark Time Spy test, the Predator Triton 500 is nearly on par with larger laptops using GeForce GTX 1070 and Radeon RX Vega 56 GPUs.

You may doubt the synthetic tests, but they’re backed up by games, too. For example, we ran Rise of the Tomb Raider set to Very High at 1920×1080 resolution in DX11 mode (our standard setting for gaming laptops). As you can see, the Acer Predator Triton 500 again finds itself squeezed between GTX 1070 and GTX 1070 Max-Q laptops.

IDG

Ubisoft’s Rise of the Tomb Raider test results match that of 3DMark.

One last mention: It has a physical turbo button. Turbo buttons do different things on different laptops. In the Predator Triton 500, it gives you a GPU performance boost of about 10 percent or so, while the CPU remains mostly the same. We had no stability issues using the turbo button, and we’ll note that it resets after any reboot.

IDG

Acer Predator Triton 500 Battery Performance

The last performance test is probably the most important to most laptop owners: Battery life. We measure battery life by playing a looped 4K resolution video file in airplane mode using earbuds, with keyboard backlighting turned off. For screen brightness we run at 250 nits to 260 nits, which is comfortable for a lit office environment.

Although 4K video was once a stress test for laptops, most laptops today are on cruise control, while the integrated graphics does all of the heavy lifting using dedicated circuits. With its 82-watt-hour battery, the Predator Triton 500 comes in just under 6 hours of playback time. Overall we’d rate it at decent. It’s a little lower than comparably sized powerful laptops, but still quite good.

That’s not the fault of the Predator Triton 500—it’s what you’ll get on any laptop with the CPU or GPU working hard.

IDG

The Acer Predator Triton 500 gives up decent battery life.

Conclusion

So where does the Predator Triton 500 land? At $1,800 (at the time of this review) for the version here, it’s decently priced. We say that because we know some will want to compare the Predator Triton 500 to other laptops with the same or slightly better components, and a similar or smaller price. We’d bet a box of donuts those laptops are generally bulkier, though.

No, the Predator Triton 500 definitely doesn’t belong in that category at all. Instead, it should be compared to MSI’s GS65 Stealth Thin, the Asus ROG Zephyrus S, and the Razer Blade 15. That’s good company to run with, and the Predator Triton 500 holds its own. Performance is likely to vary depending on the specs on the comparable models.

Adam Patrick Murray

The Acer Predator Triton 500 features an 8th gen Core i7-8750H and Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 GPU along with 16GB of dual-channel RAM and 512GB NVMe M.2 SSD.

Msi Laptop Buying Guide: How To Choose The Right Laptop In 2023?

It’s already October and if you’re feeling the lockdown blues that won’t go away no matter how much you’ve been waiting for fall weather, you can take joy in the fact that Diwali is fast approaching. That means a lot of good things, including some amazing deals on electronics and gadgets. So if you’re thinking of buying an MSI laptop this holiday season during the MSI Diwali sale, here’s a guide we’ve put together to help you decide just which laptop will suit your needs perfectly.

Gaming Laptops Enthusiast Gamers

If you are an enthusiast gamer looking for your next gaming laptop, you are probably looking for something that can play pretty much any AAA title under the sun at 4K resolution with good frame rates. Even if you don’t want 4K, as an enthusiast, you obviously want to experience ray tracing in supported games. Well, to get performance that would satisfy an enthusiast gamer, you will need the latest processors, highest-end graphics cards, and a large amount of RAM and storage, right?

MSI’s laptops come with up to 10th-gen Intel Core processors. Plus you get up to Nvidia’s RTX 2070 GPUs which will let you use ray tracing, and Nvidia DLSS for a much better, smoother gaming experience. You also get nice and large amounts of RAM and storage plus high refresh rate displays and what not. As an enthusiast, MSI’s offerings will probably prove very worthwhile to you.

Take the MSI GP65 Leopard 10SFK, for example. This laptop brings pretty much everything an enthusiast gamer could want, including the RTX 2070 GPU. You will be able to play your favourite games with ease, and even stream them to your followers on Twitch without the laptop breaking a sweat.

The MSI GP65 Leopard is available on Flipkart for ₹1,61,990.

There are a bunch of configurations you can choose to go with, by the way, you don’t necessarily want the RTX 2070, or 32GB RAM, etc, and MSI has a bunch of other laptops that will offer you RTX graphics, and high-end gaming experience at other price points and with different specs that you can check out. For example, you can take a look at the GL65 Leopard (₹1,19,990), or the GF65 Thin (₹1,09,990) for getting your RTX gaming fix at other price ranges.

Mid Range Budget

On the other hand, maybe you’re not an enthusiast gamer, but you just like to play the latest games, get good graphics and frame rates, and not end up spending way too much money on your hobby. Maybe you want a laptop that offers a better price to performance ratio, or you simply don’t care about things like ray tracing or DLSS (yet). In that case, you can probably sacrifice a little in the processor and graphics card department to bring both the price down, and get a laptop that’s more of a fit for both work and play.

If that sounds like you, a 9th-gen processor should prove good enough for your needs, and you also don’t need to spend the extra money to get an RTX GPU. A GTX 16-series graphics card is more than capable enough of handling AAA games at good settings and give you really nice frame rates for an enjoyable experience with your favourite games.

Also, if you want slightly better performance in games, you can check out the GF63 Thin (₹77,739). The GF63 comes in a bunch of different variants and there are a lot of choices to go with. You can get a variety of storage options, GPU choices including GTX 1650 and GTX 1650 Ti, etc.

There are other MSI laptops as well in a similar price bracket that you can check out for a mid-range budget gaming laptop.

For Gamers on the Move (Thin and Light Gaming Laptops)

Finally, if you’re like me and you have to carry your laptop to work/college every day, and you don’t want a heavy back-breaking device to lug around, thin and light gaming laptops are probably your best bet. These laptops offer similar specs as the mid-range offerings in this list, but they focus a lot on being portable. That’s a big reason why these laptops offer GTX 16-series graphics cards instead of an RTX GPU.

The MSI GF65 Thin is available on Flipkart for ₹1,04,990

There are other laptops here as well, such as the GF75 Thin (₹90,990) and even a Core i5 variant of the GF65 Thin (₹89,990) along with other options that you can check out.

Productivity

As a creative professional, you probably want a laptop that offers high end specs including a capable graphics card. At the same time, you would want a laptop that’s thin and light, and also looks like a work machine, and not a gaming device. Plus, it should be able to handle heavy apps such as Adobe’s creative suite, or high-end graphics editing or AR apps that you might need to work on, or maybe even things like Blender and Maya.

The MSI Prestige 15 is available on Flipkart for ₹1,36,590

On the other hand, if you don’t really need a powerful GPU for your work, or if you basically just work on Photoshop and similar software, there are some other options as well, including the Prestige 14 (₹92,990) and the Modern A15 (₹69,490) that you can check out based on your preferences.

Gigabyte P55 V4 Gaming Laptop Review

Pros

Cons

Our Verdict

We had issues with the Gigabyte P55 V4’s underperforming display and keyboard and trackpad don’t meet quality for the price but this laptop is assuredly fast for gaming and other applications.

Intel’s Broadwell mobile quad-core processor finally emerges in this Gigabyte  gaming laptop. Find out how it performs in our Gigabyte P55 V4 review. See also: Best gaming laptops of 2024

Gigabyte is better known for PC motherboards, but the Taiwan company is bringing gaming laptops to the UK – under its own name and upmarket sub-brand Aorus. The Gigabyte P55 is an otherwise unremarkable 15-inch gaming laptop, its strong graphics abilities supported with a powerful GTX 970M graphics processor.

Move along Nvidia though, because while the GPU is the beating heart of a games station, the Gigabyte P55 V4 gains a new brain in the first quad-core 14 nm Broadwell chip for mobile notebooks. This gaming laptop is the first to use the new Intel Core i7-5700HQ, clocked at 2.7 GHz with Turbo to 3.5 GHz. See all laptop reviews.

Gigabyte P55 V4 review: Build and design

Black plastic with a satin sheen forms the casework of this chunky Gigabyte P55 V4 laptop, 36 mm thick and over 2.6 kg in weight. There’s a DVD drive to the right, a useful two USB 3.0 each side, HDMI and VGA on the left but no DisplayPort. A large exhaust vent whistles with warms air, turning to hot while gaming.

No access doors or removable battery are offered on the underside, and meshed air intakes here mean it’s less suitable for lap-top or carpet parking. Overall fan noise is not terrible but louder than the best of the current breed.

Best budget laptops 2024.

Inside Gigabyte missed a chance to include faster 1866 MHz memory, instead using a single 8 GB module at 1600 MHz. The new CPU is an Intel ‘tick’ upgrade, a process shrink with potential energy savings. We measured 4 hr 07 min battery life from the laptop.

The 15.6in full-HD display is IPS-based but was unusually limited to 85 percent sRGB, and while the LG panel is specified to 300 cd/m^2 this dim sample couldn’t exceed 130 cd/m2. A viewing angle issue meant slight but noticeable colour shift with head movement, even face-on.

Storage is two-fold – a 128 GB boot SSD and 1 TB hard disk. For Wi-Fi the Gigabyte P55 V4 takes a recent Intel two-stream 802.11ac wireless adaptor.

Gigabyte P55 V4 review: Performance

Geekbench 3 scored the Gigabyte P55 V4 with a healthy 13,178 points (3349 points single-core), and the PCMark 8 result reinforced this result with 3328 points (Home Accelerated).

Most Windows action games should play at native screen resolution and high or even highest available detail – Tomb Raider 2013 zipped along at 163 fps average (Normal) and could still manage 59 fps at Ultimate.

The Batmark has a smaller range of adjustment, where the P55 ranged from 71 fps at 1080p and Medium, to 64 fps at Extreme. Metro: Last Light played at 69 fps (High) and 27 fps (Very High, all effects).
