You're reading Opera For Chromebook: How To Download & Install It
Chromebooks are Google’s lightweight laptops that run on Chrome OS. These machines are designed to be used primarily while connected to the Internet. They are by design safe, durable, and secure, especially when compared with traditional computers. Google really has done its homework when it comes to Chromebook security. It offers interesting automated and customizable features to keep your information and laptop safe. Let’s check various ways to secure your Chromebook.
As with any operating system, installing regular updates is critical to the overall health and security of your device. Generally, your Chromebook will automatically look for available updates. You will be notified if an update is available, which makes keeping things up to date easy. You simply have to restart the Chromebook to update it.
You can also periodically check for updates manually as shown below:2. Use a PIN Instead of a Password
Typically, Chromebooks use the same password as your Google account for logging in. We recommend replacing this barrier with a PIN.
Open Settings on your Chromebook.
Go to “Security and privacy” followed by “Lock screen and sign-in.”
Enter your Google account password in the pop-up window.
Select the PIN or password option under “Lock screen from sleep mode” and hit the “Set up PIN” option. When prompted, enter the PIN that you want to use. (Please don’t use common or personal numbers like birthdays, anniversaries, etc.)3. Show Lock Screen After Waking Up From Sleep
Generally, when you close the lid of your Chromebook, the device will go to sleep. When you reopen it, it doesn’t ask for a password. This isn’t safe as anyone can then access your Chromebook. To fix this problem, force the device to show the lock screen, that requires you to enter your password, when waking it up from sleep.
Go to “Settings → Security and privacy → Lock screen and sign-in.”
Enter your Google password.
Enable the toggle for “Show lock screen when waking from sleep.”
If you’re stepping away from your device for a bit, use the Search + L keyboard shortcut to lock your Chromebook instantly.4. Take Advantage of Guest Mode
Does someone want to borrow your Chromebook? I would be apprehensive about such a request had it not been for the availability of the Guest mode.
The Guest mode on Chromebook offers an easy and secure way to let others use your Chromebook temporarily without allowing them to fidget with your personal documents, apps, settings, or other Google products.
If you don’t see the guest browsing option, go to “Settings → Security and privacy → Manage other people” and turn on the toggle for “Enable guest browsing.”5. Restrict Sign-in to Selected Users
If multiple users have access to your Chromebook via their own user profiles, but you don’t want everyone to sign in, you can restrict sign-in to only a few users. Enabling this feature adds another layer of security by removing the “Add Person” option from the lock screen, which would otherwise allow anyone to create a new user profile on your Chromebook.
Go to Chromebook “Settings → Security and privacy → Manage other people.”6. Secure Chrome Browser Lost Your Chromebook? Sign Out Remotely
If your Chromebook gets stolen, misplaced, or comes into the wrong hands, you can sign out of your Chromebook remotely from another device. This won’t help you recover your Chromebook but at least your data will remain safe.Frequently Asked Questions Should you install antivirus software on Chromebook?
Chromebooks require no antivirus apps as such because Chrome OS is a locked-down operating system that efficiently combats some of the user error that contributes to malware, thus securing the device.
For example, Chromebooks offer “sandboxing” to keep tabs/apps isolated from one another. Even if one tab or app is infected, it won’t affect others. Secondly, Chromebooks verify their boot process, i.e., Chrome OS checks the system startup to ensure that the operating system has not been tampered with. If it detects anything wrong in the system, it repairs itself automatically. How to protect your Google account?
There is an obvious need for a Google account in order to use a Chromebook fully, and you must secure your Google account in order to secure a Chromebook. To do so, for starters, enable two-factor authentication, add a recovery phone and email address, and use a strong password for your Google account. How do I make Chromebook private?
To make your Chromebook private, you should stop syncing data, switch to a different search portal, and change DNS information. Learn how to tighten up Chromebook privacy in detail.

Did you know you can download a Windows 10 disc image free from Microsoft? This is seemingly little known, but yes you can download a complete legitimate Windows 10 ISO without registering or even having a product key, and you can install and run the entirety of Windows 10 using the image too.
Once you have the Windows 10 ISO downloaded to a computer, you can then use it to install into a virtual machine, create an installer drive, use it for Boot Camp, or install it onto a PC. What you do with the Windows 10 disc image after you download it is up to you, but there are no practical limitations on the file as it’s a full official release as a disc image, downloaded directly from Microsoft. Activation can be skipped and performed later. How to Download Windows 10 Disc Image ISO Free from Microsoft
You can download the Windows 10 disc image using any web browser from just about any operating system, we’re showing this on a Mac but you can download it on another Windows PC or Linux machine too. The file arrives as a standard .iso disk image file. Here’s what you’ll want to do:
Go to this chúng tôi official download page for Windows 10
Choose the Windows 10 edition you want to download, then choose the language for which to download the Windows 10 ISO for and choose confirm
After you have downloaded the operating system you’re able to use the ISO file for whatever purpose you want, whether that is it to install Windows 10 into Boot Camp on Mac, to install Windows 10 into VirtualBox on a Mac (or PC), make a Windows 10 USB install drive from a Mac, make an installer DVD by burning the iso, install into Boot Camp on a different Mac entirely, or even use the ISO to update, reinstall, or install Windows 10 onto a PC. It’s a full Windows 10 ISO and is therefore compatible with anything that Windows would normally be compatible with.Activating Windows 10, or not
It’s important to note that if you choose to not activate Windows 10, the release has limited usage, and certain features of the operating system will be unavailable until you do activate the release. Activating Windows 10 can be done after installing by entering a product key either obtained from the Microsoft ordering process or elsewhere.
Of course if you plan on using Windows 10 beyond a test run or want the full set of features, like the ability to continuously use it, change wallpaper, and personalize the system, you’ll want to buy the full release and a product key, which you can then enter into the already installed Windows 10 release.
Microsoft offering Windows 10 as a free download this way offers a great way to test out the Windows 10 experience before committing to buying it. It’s also helpful for developers or those who need to just run Windows 10 for a specific purpose, perhaps for testing a particular single game or particular application. Do note that web developers have another option available which is to run Microsoft Edge and Windows 10 in a dedicated virtual machine as described here, which is also an official download from Microsoft. That solution may be easier for some users if the primary intention of downloading Windows 10 is to run in a virtual machine anyway, since it arrives as pre-configured VM that only needs to be launched into VirtualBox or VMware. For optimal performance however, you’ll want to run Windows 10 directly, either on a PC or through Boot Camp on a Mac.
Multiple monitor setup is a boon if you want extra desktop real estate. Most Macs are capable of powering one or even two monitors. However, a decent monitor could end up eating your wallet. But what if I tell you that you can use your old (or even new) Chromebook as a Mac monitor? Read on to find out more!
Can I use my Chromebook as a monitor?
The best part is that you don’t require cables or dongles. Mac can connect to Chromebook wirelessly with the help of a third-party app called Duet Display. However, you need to pay a one-time fee of $14.99 to use the app. This article explains how you can use a Chromebook as a Mac monitor.
How to set up a Chromebook as a secondary monitor on Mac
The process might feel tedious, but it’s pretty simple and super effective. Follow the next few steps to get started.
1. Install and configure Duet display on Mac
Firstly, you need to prep your Mac. Download Duet Display. Duet Display needs Accessibility and Screen access permissions. Once installed, grant the required permissions.
Grant recording access: Open System Preferences → Security & Privacy → Privacy → Screen recording. Once done, toggle the back lock icon. Now, launch the Duet Air and sign up. Select Sign in for Remote Desktop.
Lastly, you need to enable screen sharing on Duet. Tap Profile on the left menu pane. Select Screen Sharing Enabled.
2. Add Chromebook as the second monitor on Mac
Install Duet Display on Chromebook. You need to set up a Chromebook as a secondary monitor in this step. Ensure that both Chromebook and Mac are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
Tip: You can change screen positions by going to System Preferences → Displays → Arrangement. Furthermore, Duet also lets you use a Chromebook keypad and trackpad.
Manage Duet Display settings
Duet Display offers a slew of settings for optimum user experience. It lets you change text size, display resolution, and choose framerate. It is important to note that some settings will increase battery consumption. Let’s take a closer look at Duet Display settings:
1. Resolution and text
Duet Display lets you set various parameters, including framerate and quality. Select larger text if your work involves reading in detail. Smaller text size helps in accommodating more screen elements.
Retina setting scales up your resolution and, thus, pixel density. In other words, the setting offers the highest possible resolution while compromising on battery life.
3. Frame rate and quality
The frame rate setting lets you choose between 60 fps and 30 fps. You will notice less lag and smoother transitions with a higher frame rate. However, it comes at the cost of battery life.
Quality settings play an important role when mirroring your Mac display. The higher quality setting displays fewer artifacts and uses more battery. Meanwhile, the Regular Quality is adequate for general purposes like browsing the web or checking email.
I noticed some lag on Chromebook initially. The lag disappeared after I switched to the highest setting. I would suggest using the highest setting alongside the power source.
Q. Does a Chromebook work well as an external monitor?
Surprisingly, it does. The Chromebook doubles up as a full-fledged laptop when not used as a monitor. The setup is best suited for those who occasionally need an external monitor.
Q. How to use a Chromebook as a monitor for Windows PC?
Duet Display supports Windows PC. So yes, you can use Chromebook as a monitor for Windows PC.
Q. Is Duet Display free for Chromebook?
Duet Display is free for Mac. The base version is priced at $14.99 for a lifetime license. The optional subscription is priced at $34.99. In-app purchases let you use the iPad Pro as a drawing tablet with Apple Pencil.
Duet Display is functional and offers a consistent experience. The one-time subscription pricing is reasonable until you feel the need for more features.
For instance, the remote desktop feature is available only on Duet Air. It costs an additional $24.99/year. On top of this, you need to shell out $34.99/year for Apple Pencil support. You can also use an iPad as a monitor or drawing pad.

First, download and use the Google Family Link app on your phone to set up an account for your child.
If it is a new Chromebook, follow the setup process and sign in with your (parent) account. This is vital, as the first account used to sign in becomes the owner account and has access to special privileges. Skip to the next step if the Chromebook is already active.
Now, add your child’s account to the Chromebook.
In the People section, go to Manage Other People.
Turn on Restrict sign-in to the following users. You will see a list of accounts added to the Chromebook and be able to add and remove them accordingly.
Turn off Enable Guest Browsing.

Chromebook parental control features in Google Family Link
We’ve talked a lot about how to set your Google Family Link restrictions, but what can you actually do? After all, it’s not helpful to run into Family Link mostly blind. Here are a few of the most important features you can manage:
Restrict or block access to apps from the Chrome Web Store and the Google Play Store.
Disable Incognito Mode.
Manage the websites your children can visit on Chrome.
Limit your child’s ability to grant permissions to websites.
By default, with Family Link, the Chrome browser tries to block sexually explicit and violent sites from being shown to children.
Set bedtimes, time limits, and lock devices.

Open the Family Link app.
Select your child’s account.
Locate and tap YouTube.
Turn the Allow app toggle off.
By blocking the website, you can also block children from accessing YouTube or any other site via Google Chrome. Here’s how to do it.
Open the Family Link app.
Select your child’s account.
Tap the Create + button at the bottom right corner.
Tap the Close X button at the top left.
You can also use this setting to allow access to only specific sites using Family Link. Under Google Chrome, you can choose to Allow all sites, Try to block explicit sites, or Only allow approved sites. Use the Manage sites feature to approve the sites.

Family Link also has a screen time limits feature that lets you block YouTube for a specific time. You can set a maximum use time limit for YouTube, after which the app will be blocked for the rest of the day. Here’s how to do it.
Open the Family Link app.
Select your child’s account.
Locate the Manage apps card, and select Set limits.
Next to YouTube, tap the Hourglass, and tap Set limit.
Set the limit as per your preference.
You can repeat these steps for Google Chrome if you want to set a limit for YouTube in Chrome. Instead, you can block YouTube from Chrome using the steps above, and set a time limit for the YouTube app.

There are still a few features missing from Chromebook parental controls via Google Family Link. One limitation of Google Family Link is that you can only use it to set up accounts for children under 13. After that, children can create and set up regular Google accounts.
Many consider it a big limitation that they cannot use Family Link with accounts set up with Google Workspace. Users (parents) will need a Gmail account to log in and use Family Link to set up parental controls on any of their children’s devices. But there are some good premium third-party services like Mobicip, if you aren’t entirely happy with Google’s solutions.

Chromebooks are meant to be easy to use, and that is exactly where Chrome OS shines. However, Chrome OS isn’t as functional as compared to other operating systems like Linux. So, if you are someone who loves to tinker, you might have wondered if you could install another operating system, such as Ubuntu, on your Chromebook. So, here is how to install Linux on a Chromebook:Install Ubuntu on Chromebook with Crouton
In order to install Ubuntu on a Chromebook, you will first have to download Crouton. Crouton – an acronym for “Chromium OS Universal Chroot Environment” – is a bundle of scripts that allow the easy installation of Linux systems such as Ubuntu, and Debian. We will use Crouton to install Ubuntu on our Chromebook. Just follow the steps below:
1. First, you will have to enable Developer Mode in Chrome OS. You can check out our detailed article on the same.
Note: Unfortunately, as of this writing, Ubuntu’s XFCE, and Unity Desktop Environments aren’t working properly on Chromebooks, which is why I would suggest that you use LXDE for the time being.
6. When the installation is finished, simply type “sudo startlxde” to start the Linux desktop. You will be asked for the encryption passphrase you created while installing Ubuntu, just key it in, and you’re ready to go.Switch Back to Chrome OS from Linux
If you want to get back to Chrome OS from Ubuntu, you can simply log out of Ubuntu in the normal way, and you’ll immediately be taken back to Chrome OS.
You should be able to switch between Linux, and Chrome OS, on the fly, by using Ctrl + Alt + Shift + Forward, and Ctrl + Alt + Shift + Back (on ARM Chromebooks), and Ctrl + Alt + Forward, and Ctrl + Alt + Back, followed by Ctrl + Alt + Refresh (on Intel Chromebooks), but unfortunately, that didn’t work for me on LXDE on my Asus Chromebook Flip.Linux on a Chromebook: The Experience
Ubuntu works very well on a Chromebook. However, since the XFCE, and Unity Desktop Environments aren’t working, as yet, you’re stuck with using LXDE – a Desktop Environment not many people like. The only problem I noticed with LXDE, is the fact that if you own a touch enabled Chromebook, like the Asus Chromebook Flip, the touch doesn’t work very predictably in LXDE, and the UI is a tad too small. However, at least the latter can be fixed by adjusting the screen resolution for Linux.
Overall, though, the experience is very smooth, and everything works as one would expect. So, if you’re wondering if it’s worth the effort, it kind of is.Install Linux on Chromebook to Unlock Its Potential
You can use this method to easily install Linux/Ubuntu on a Chromebook, and unlock its true power. When you’re running Linux on a Chromebook, you can install Linux apps in the same way as you would install them on a normal Linux computer, by using apt-get. However, if you’re using an ARM Chromebook, some apps might not work properly for you. Chances of apps working are much better on an Chromebook with an Intel processor.
