Suggested March 2024 How To Use “Hey Siri” On Older Macs

While Apple has made the Siri functionality available for older Macs, the company has not made the “Hey Siri” activation function available for all the Macs that support Siri. If you own an old Mac, you would know you have Siri but you do not have access to the “Hey Siri” hands-free command on your machine. Fortunately, though, you have a workaround to get access to the Siri’s hands-free command even on your old Mac.

The workaround uses the dictation feature on your Mac to let you call Siri with your voice. Essentially, by setting “Hey” as a wake phrase and “Siri” as the word to invoke the launch of Siri, you are able to speak to the virtual assistant naturally.

The following is a multi-step procedure to follow to get things running on your machine.

How to Enable Hey Siri on Old Macs

As mentioned earlier, you are going to be using the dictation feature on your Mac to activate Siri. The dictation feature will listen to your voice and send an appropriate command to launch the Siri app on your machine.

.

When I say – Siri

While using – Any Application

Go ahead and say “Hey Siri,” and Siri will launch and be ready to assist you on your Mac. You can ask her the usual Siri commands, and she will answer you.

Using Other Invocation Words

You can, of course, set this up for any other application, too. Instead of “Siri,” set the invocation word as the name of the application you wish to launch.

Now, stating “Hey Adobe Premiere Pro” will launch Premiere Pro. On the other hand, stating “Hey Siri, launch Adobe Premiere Pro” would also do the same thing – just with the Siri interface we had set up previously.

Conclusion

Getting the Hey Siri functionality on older Macs is pretty easy, all thanks to the built-in dictation feature on the Mac. We hope the above guide helps you enable the functionality so you can launch Siri with your voice on your Mac.

Because now that company has announced that you can use Siri shortcuts for Spotify, navigating through the app has become easier. So without further ado, let’s check out the different Spotify Siri shortcuts & start accessing the app in a whole new way:

How to Install Spotify Siri Shortcut App & Create Siri Shortcuts

In order to use the Siri Spotify shortcuts, first we would need to create a Siri shortcut for Spotify only. Because right now, you can use Siri to open up the Spotify app just like any other app. So let’s install the Siri Shortcut app on your device & create Siri Spotify Shortcut with below steps:

2. Install the Shortcuts app & open it on your device.

5. Tap on the Record icon on the Shortcuts App & start recording your initial Siri command (phrase).

6. Have a different phase like Play Spotify/Run Spotify/Spotify Siri or Siri Spotify so that it’s easily identifiable.

7. Finish the process & next time, wherever you activate Siri, just say the phrase you used for playing tracks on Spotify. Shoot with the track you want to play & Siri automatically will take the process ahead.

You are all set to use Siri Shortcuts on the Spotify app that won’t require using iPhone keypad at all.

How to Use Siri Shortcuts on Spotify

If Siri Shortcuts App has been installed on the device as you expected (above process), check out the steps to use Siri Shortcuts on Spotify App:

1. Activate the Siri on your device & speak out the command you created as Spotify Siri Shortcut.

2. When Siri takes the command, a Dictation box will appear on the screen. Simply speak the name of the song or the artist you want to listen to the songs of.

3. The next step would be Spotify navigating through the app for your command & play the track you gave command for. Simple as that.

Additional Siri Spotify Shortcuts

If you can install the Shortcuts App & use it to create shortcuts as simple as opening an app, you can use the same app for creating additional shortcuts.

For example, listening to any of the specific artists or a particular album where you can get access to many songs from the same album or the same artist.

Please know that Shortcuts App is seamlessly working on iOS12 or later version, however, what if you are using an older version of iOS before iOS12.

Now that we have activated Ask Siri on the device, let’s start giving commands to Siri for playing music. Just remember that you will need to include On/From Spotify at the end of every command you give. For example, “Hey Siri, play Frank Sinatra Songs on Spotify”.

Wrapping Up

How To Get Android Oreo Features On Older Devices

Google has officially launched the Android 8.0 Oreo version which has already been rolled out to a few devices. This version of Android has some very good features that everyone would like to have, but unfortunately cannot on their old devices. If you are using an older phone that has no chance to get Android Oreo, here are some ways you can get Android Oreo’s features on your device.

Notification Snoozing

Android Oreo allows the user to snooze notifications and make them appear again later. On older devices you can install Boomerang Notifications. This is developed at Cardiff University and brings the notifications snoozing feature to your phone. Once installed, make sure you select the applications whose notifications you would like to snooze.

After completing the setup, go to your notifications window and swipe a notification. It will then send you a prompt, asking if you want to save the notification or get notified later.

Picture in Picture

This is a very nice feature on Android 8.0 that allows one to shrink something, like a video, into a small window that appears on top of other applications. This can be replicated on older phones with Floating Apps. It has a free version and a paid one that goes for $4.

Tap on the application you would like to float. In my case I have two applications, the calculator and the File Manager. The diagram below shows the two apps.

WiFi Toggling

Android 8.0 comes with a very amazing WiFi toggling feature. It allows one to turn on and connect to a previously-connected WiFi network automatically whenever they are in range. With this feature you don’t have to keep your WiFi on all the time. The Smart WiFi Toggler brings this feature to older phones. Download this app from Google Play Store and enable it.

Home Screen Menu Expanded and Notification Dots

Google’s Pixel Launcher comes with Android 8.0 in their Pixel phone. This launcher has a feature that enables you to see some dots or lines on application icons that enables you to know which applications have pending notifications. Apart from this feature, pressing and holding on an icon on the home screen allows you to see notifications there and still get any widgets related to the app.

These two features do not come in older devices, but you can get them by installing a launcher called Action Launcher. It has a free and paid version that costs almost $5. In the screenshots below take a look at applications like Play Store; they have a slight three lines symbol showing that there are notifications.

Night Light Mode

The Android Nougat release introduced the ability to have the display automatically adjust itself to have optimal reading at night. However, Android 8.0 has an intensity fine-tuning that takes this feature a notch higher. To get similar features on any Android device, go to Google Play Store and install Twilight. This app will give you the exact same features just like in Android 8.0.

With the above-mentioned apps you can now enjoy Android Oreo’s features without your phone physically running Android 8.0. This is much better to have while waiting for the upgrade for your device to arrive.
