Miracast has been a part of Windows 10, as a result, it is a great option to cast your PC screen wirelessly to a TV or projector.

Gone are the days when cables were the only means for transmitting media content from a PC or any other compatible device to an HDTV: Miracast is quick, easy, and secure.

This guide will teach you how to quickly set up and use Miracast on your Windows 10 PC and start sharing your screens to multiple devices.

But, if you are looking for how to download and use Miracast on Windows 11, make sure to check out our separate dedicated guide.

Can I install Miracast on Windows 10?

Some people mentioned that Miracast is not supported in Windows 10, however, this is not true. You will have no trouble employing Miracast on your Windows 10 computer and note that you don’t need to download it since it is already integrated into the OS.

What can I do if my PC does not support Miracast?

Windows PCs support Miracast by default, thus if you get the Miracast not supported error message, note that this is an internal issue and you can fix it by following our dedicated article.

How do I connect my Miracast laptop to Windows 10? 1. How to check if your Windows PC supports Miracast

2. Get the current Miracast drivers for your PC

A driver is a program that controls a particular type of device that is connected to your computer. It is the software that an attached device uses to work with your PC.

If your PC originally came with Windows 10, it most likely has Miracast support. Those who upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 may not have this support. Windows 10 supports Miracast from a software aspect.

Even if your PC supports Miracast, you will need to have updated Miracast drivers for it to work. Wireless (Miracast) displays can only be supported by Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) 1.3 and later models.

The easiest way to update your Intel wireless driver and software is to download and install a third-party driver updater software.

This tool automatically checks and updates your drivers to the latest version. For example, if your Miracast drivers are out of date, the app will identify them and give you the option to have them updated.

Here’s how to do it:

Download and install the Outbyte Driver Updater app.

Launch the software.

Wait for the app to detect all incompatible drivers.

Afterward, it will show you a list of the drivers found to select the ones to Update or Ignore.

Restart your PC to ensure the applied changes.

3. How to use Miracast to wirelessly project your Windows 10 PC to an HDTV

1. Plug the Miracast adapter into one of the HDMI ports on your TV.

2. Select the correct HDMI channel.

3. Now open the Start Menu on your Windows 10 computer. You will find it at the bottom left corner of your screen.

After you ensure that your Windows 10 PC can support Miracast and install the necessary drivers, you can proceed to use it.

In order to project your PC via Miracast, you need to connect the Miracast adapter to your PC, then access Display Settings, as shown above.

Users can now seamlessly mirror the displays of their Miracast-certified tablet, phone, or laptop to any Miracast-supported receiver such as an HDTV, monitor, or projector.

Brands like Samsung and LG TV will work great with Miracast on Windows 10. Bur besides mirroring your content to the large screen, Miracast secures your connection with WPA2 encryption so protected content can freely flow through it.

However, if you still can’t use Miracast, we recommend that you take a look at other top software for screen mirroring compatible with Windows 10 & 11.

How To Get Macos Mojave Features On Windows 10

Apple’s latest iteration to its desktop operating system was announced at WWDC earlier this month. Named ‘macOS Mojave,’ the update brings with it a bevy of new features including some long-awaited things like the dark mode, and other features and cosmetic upgrades that are pretty nice. So, if you’re wondering how to get these features on a Windows 10 PC, well we’ve got your back.

Get macOS Mojave Features on Windows 10

Getting macOS Mojave features on Windows 10 is a relatively simple task, partly because a lot of these features are built into Windows, and partly because most of the apps you’ll need to get these features are easily available and free. So here’s how you can get each of the macOS Mojave features on Windows 10.

1. Dark Mode

The dark mode is easily the most requested feature of all time. While earlier versions of macOS featured a dark mode that was utterly useless, this time Apple has shipped a dark mode that’s worthy of the name and looks beautiful.

In Settings, go to Personalization.

Here, head over to ‘Colors.’

Scroll down and change the ‘Default app mode’ to ‘Dark.’

This will change all the app windows and stuff to shades of black and grey. However, things like the taskbar, and the Start Menu still remain as they were. However, if you scroll back up, you’ll find an option to pick color manually. Just select the darkest color you can find here, and the Start Menu and taskbar will both turn dark as well.

2. Dynamic Wallpaper

Yet another addition to macOS Mojave came in the form of Dynamic Wallpapers. These are basically wallpapers that change according to the time of the day. So the Mojave desert wallpaper that’s the default on macOS Mojave changes the lighting conditions of the photo from day time to afternoon to the evening and finally at night. It looks stunning.

Getting that exact feature on Windows 10 is currently not possible, but you can get something that comes pretty close.

Download the macOS Mojave wallpapers from this link.

Make a folder and make two copies of each of the wallpapers inside the folder.

Head over to Personalization settings, and from the ‘Background’ dropdown, choose ‘Slideshow.‘

Choose the folder you just made with the wallpapers, and set ‘change picture’ to ‘6 hours.’

Now, turn of shuffle, and enable ‘allow slideshow on battery power.’

What you’ve basically done is set the daytime and night-time wallpapers from macOS Mojave to automatically change every 12 hours giving off the illusion that it’s a dynamic wallpaper. Pretty neat, isn’t it?

3. Stacks

It’s nice, and fortunately you can get a similar functionality on Windows as well.

Install the app, and as soon as you’ve done all the set-up formalities such as creating a free account, Fences will automatically sort your desktop into neat folder-like things.

4. Quick Look

Quick Look is an awesome feature that I love using on my Mac. It allows me to quickly peek into a file, scrub through a video, check out the contents of a PDF, and all without opening the files in dedicated apps.

To get the same functionality on Windows, all you need is a free app.

Once you’ve done that, you’re ready to go. Simply select an image, file, or audio file, and press ‘Space’ to open it up in Quick Look.

Believe me, Quick Look is one feature that will get you addicted to using it. It’s really very useful. Plus, the Quicklook app on Microsoft Store is completely free, so there’s no harm in trying.

5. Screenshot Tool

If you want a similar feature on Windows, you’ll have to use an app called Tiny Take (free). You simply have to install the app on your Windows 10 PC and that’s it. Tiny Take brings a number of handy keyboard shortcuts to take screenshots, to record the screen, and to even record a video from the webcam.

Tiny Take also does this thing where after you take a screenshot it directly takes you into a handy editing app where you can perform some basic editing including things like annotation, cropping, and more.

If, however, you don’t want to install a third-party app, the latest builds of Windows 10 also include a keyboard shortcut ‘Windows + Shift + S’ to bring up a screenshot tool with a couple of basic options that should be enough for most people.

6. Finder Features

For Gallery View, all you need to do is:

Head over to the ‘View’ tab in Explorer.

Here, enable the ‘Preview Pane’ to get a Gallery View like view in Explorer.

The Quick Actions on macOS Mojave are a little harder to get, but Windows comes with contextual buttons as well. In a folder with images, you’ll get a ‘Picture tools’ inside Explorer with actions like rotate, set as background and more.

During Miracast set up on your Windows 11 or Windows 10 PC, you may encounter the Your PC doesn’t support Miracast error. If you set it up successfully but find that Miracast disconnects randomly then this post is sure to help you resolve the issue.

Miracast keeps disconnecting randomly on Windows PC

If Miracast randomly disconnects on your Windows 11/10 device, you can try our recommended solutions below in no particular order and see if that helps to resolve the issue.

Run Network Troubleshooter

Update driver

Change Network Adapter Power Management

Configure Unicast Response

Reset Network Adapter

Run Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter

Let’s take a look at the description of the process involved concerning each of the listed solutions.

Before you try the solutions below, you can do the following, and after each task see if Miracast can successfully connect normally and stay connected without issues:

Restart PC. Also turn off, then turn on your wireless display.

Update TV/display software. Refer to the user manual. Software updates enable you to get the latest updates and features that can help you deal with the mirroring issue.

Check your wireless connection. Ensure that the display and your PC are not more than 15.2 meters and remove any obstacle in this space. Otherwise, consider using a wireless booster. If you’re using Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter, see the guide on how to fix Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter issues.

Check the display Power Saving mode. When a device is on power-saving mode, most features won’t work.

Update Windows. Check for updates and install any available bits on your Windows 11/10 device and see if the issue in hand is resolved. On the other hand, if the error started after a recent Windows update, you can perform System Restore or uninstall the update – you may want to perform either of the task as a last resort.

Disable AV. This largely depends on the security software you have installed. Refer to the instruction manual.

1] Run Network Troubleshooter

Since Miracast runs on the Wi-Fi network, you can run the Network Troubleshooter and see if the Miracast randomly disconnects issue on your Windows 11/10 device will be resolved. If not, try the next solution.

2] Update driver

Your Miracast not working problem is probably being caused by driver issues – you may have the wrong, outdated or corrupt device drivers on your computer. So you should update your device drivers to see if it fixes your problem. Below are your options to carry out this task:

If updating drivers wasn’t helpful or your drivers are already updated, but the issue persists, you can proceed with the next solution.

3] Change Network Adapter Power Management

To change network adapter power management simply entails turning off Network Adapter Power Saving mode. Here’s how:

Press Windows key + X to open the Power User Menu.

Tap M key on the keyboard to open Device Manager.

Once you’re inside Device Manager, scroll down through the list of installed devices and expand the Network adapters section.

4] Configure Unicast Response

Unicast is a one-to-one transmission from one point in the network to another point; that is, one sender and one receiver, each identified by a network address. Unicast Response option is useful if you need to control whether your PC receives unicast responses to its outgoing multicast or broadcast messages. The recommended state for this setting is: No.

If this setting is enabled and your PC sends multicast or broadcast messages to other computers, Windows Firewall with Advanced Security waits as long as three seconds for unicast responses from the other computers and then blocks all later responses. On the other hand, if the option is disabled, and your computer sends a multicast or broadcast message to other computers, Windows Firewall with Advanced Security will block the unicast responses sent by those other computers

To configure Unicast Response, do the following:

Press Windows key + R to invoke the Run dialog.

In the Run dialog box, type chúng tôi and hit Enter to open Local Security Policy Editor.

Select Properties from the context menu.

Restart PC.

If the issue in view persists, try the next solution.

5] Reset Network Adapter

Miracast uses WiFi Direct technology and Bluetooth. However, both are part of the protocol stack or network stack which is an implementation of a computer networking protocol suite or protocol family.

This solution requires you to reset the network adapter and see if that helps. If resetting the network adapter on your Windows 11/10 PC didn’t help to resolve the issue at hand, you can try a wireless USB dongle. If that solves the problem, you can have a PC hardware technician replace your inbuilt wireless adapter or simply keep using the dongle.

6] Run Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter

To rule out the possibility of a faulty display, that might require replacing, you can run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter. You can also try connecting the wireless display to another PC and see if the issue in focus persists.

Hope this post helps you!

Internet access is crucial for many people in this day and age, and there have been reports that users are getting Windows 10 can’t connect to this network message while trying to establish an Internet connection.

This in turn can cause a wide range of problems, including not being able to work remotely, stopping you from researching a problem, and even not allowing you to enjoy a relaxing time with your family watching your favorite shows.

No matter which category you fit in, solving network issues as fast and as securely as possible is of paramount importance.

In this guide, we will cover every way of dealing with network issues, including the most common solutions for general problems, and also step-by-step information for troubleshooting specific issues.

Why is my laptop is showing Can’t connect to this network?

This issue can occur if your PC isn’t connected to the Internet there are multiple causes for this issue, but the most common is your adapter settings.

In some instances, it’s possible that Windows can’t find the Wi-Fi network, and that’s usually caused by a problem with your adapter, so you need to check it.

Many reported that their HP laptop is not connecting to Wi-Fi, and if you encounter this problem, then you should update your drivers.

The most common solutions to dealing with network issues

➡ Check for a faulty connection

A problem with your actual network connection is one of the most common issues, and it can be split into two categories:

Setup-related issues

If you find that the information you used to log into your network is not correct, you could get in contact with your Internet Service Provider and request that they are refreshed.

Physical problems

When it comes down to the physical part of this issue, a connection that can not be maintained or used properly can include problems with the router, problems with the network card on your device, and even problems with the cables connected to the router/network card.

To check for physical problems, make sure that the router is running optimally, and that all the respective lights are turned on.

Furthermore, it would be recommended that you check if the cables are cut, or have any other sort of damage (both to and from your router/ethernet port, etc).

➡ Check your drivers

As we all know by now, drivers are an essential element to any hardware that we use, bridging the gap between software and the device itself, and having issues with drivers is not going to help.

If this important element is not fully updated, or if the driver gets corrupted, a full re-install should resolve this issue. (more details about this step in the guide below).

➡ Make sure the ISP has a good connection

In some cases, you might find that even if the above-mentioned elements are all ticked without problems, the ISP might have problems with the distribution of the Internet on their network.

To find out if that is the case, you should contact your ISP by phone and ask if everything is running smoothly on their side.

If they don’t report any issues, then it is safe to assume that the issue is local, so let’s dive into the steps you need to follow in order to resolve this annoying problem once and for all.

How can I fix Windows 10 can’t connect to a wireless network? 1. Modify network adapter settings

Change the channel width for your network adapter

Update your network adapter driver manually

Did you know that you can update drivers automatically? Updating drivers manually can be tedious and a bit hard to follow, but there’s a way to automate this process.

Make sure that your adapter and router are using the same security type

In order to protect your data, wireless connections come with certain security types such as WPA2-PSK (AES) or WPA-PSK (AES).

For your network connection to work properly, your router and computer need to use the same security type.

You can set the security type for your router by following the instructions from your router’s instruction manual.

After you’ve set a specific security type on your router, you need to check if the same security type is being used on your computer as well.

To do that, you need to follow these steps:

NOTE

The security type section should show the same security type that your router is using. You might have to try several different security types before you find the right one.

Uninstall your network adapter

If you find that Windows didn’t install the drivers automatically after the restart process, simply follow these steps.

Change your network adapter

If nothing else works, maybe you should change your network adapter.

Certain USB Wi-Fi adapters aren’t compatible with Windows 10, and if that’s the case, you might have to replace your current adapter with a newer model.

2. Modify Internet properties settings

Change the wireless network mode

You can change the wireless network mode for your router and your wireless adapter. In order for your network to work, your router and network adapter need to use the same or similar network mode.

If you want to change the network mode of your router, you’ll need to check the instruction manual, but in most cases, it won’t be necessary to change the wireless network mode on your router.

Disable IPv6 on your computer and router

If the problem still persists, you might have to disable IPv6 on your router.

Disabling IPv6 on your router is a complicated process, and it’s different for every type of router, so before you do that, check your router’s instruction manual.

If you encounter any issues or if your network protocol is missing, be sure to check out this guide that will help you get back on track.

3. Manage wireless connections

Disable and enable your wireless connection

Forget the wireless connection

Add the connection manually

After you’ve created a new network connection, everything should be working without any problems. If the issue persists, try changing the security type of your new network.

Use ipconfig /release command

Expert tip:

1. Use Command Prompt 2. Uninstall the antivirus software

For Norton users, there’s this complete guide to uninstall the antivirus. Also, there’s a similar uninstall guide regarding McAfee.

If your network connection starts working, you can install your antivirus software again, making sure to allow the Internet connection through the settings of the app.

3. Check if IPv4 and IPv6 protocols are enabled

Some users might find that they can’t access the IPv4 proprieties, but there is a simple fix for this problem.

Windows 10 can’t connect to this network, enter APN and try again

This error occurs when trying to use your Windows 10 device to connect to a cellular network, and will stop you from accessing data altogether.

To eliminate the possibility of having network issues that stem from your PC, simply follow these steps:

Connect your PC to an Ethernet or Wi-Fi network.

Open a browser and check to see if web pages are loading.

If the Internet is connected, then contact your mobile ISP and ask for APN credentials.

Use the credentials to sign into the mobile network.

If the Internet doesn’t connect through Ethernet or Wi-Fi, then it is safe to assume that your PC is not set up properly. To resolve this, simply follow the other methods described in this guide.

Windows 10 can’t connect to this network and WEP problems

We have already covered how to create a wireless connection manually in this article, but in order to connect to the network that uses WEP security, you have to set the Security type to WEP for your new connection.

Follow these steps to do so:

Windows 10 can’t connect to the network after waking from Sleep Mode 1. Disable IPv6 / Change Power Management settings

We have already explained how to disable IPv6 in this article, under the Modify internet properties settings solution.

If you’re getting Windows 10 can’t connect to this network message after your computer wakes up from Sleep Mode, you need to do check the Power Management settings for your adapter.

To do that, follow these steps:

If you use a USB network adapter, you’ll have to repeat this step for all USB devices in Device Manager.

After doing this, if your PC won’t recognize the USB devices, there are a few great solutions to apply.

2. Change Power Options

If this solution doesn’t work, you can also try changing your power plan to High Performance. To do that, follow these steps:

Some users have stated that their power plan settings are completely missing, and there are few fixes you can try if that is the case.

3. Turn off the Connect to Wi-Fi hotspots option

Few users have reported that this solution has worked for them, so you might give it a try.

If Windows doesn’t find your Wi-Fi adapter, check out this article to fix the issue.

5.4. Disable and enable your network connection / turn on and off Airplane mode

In order to fix Windows 10 can’t connect to this network error, you can disable and enable your network connection to fix the problem.

In addition, you can try turning the Airplane mode on and off in order to fix this problem.

For any Airplane mode errors, you may encounter there’s this awesome guide that can be of help.

Windows 10 can’t connect to the network after a password change

If you’ve recently changed your password for the wireless network and now can’t connect to your network, you might want to forget the connection, as shown in a previous solution.

In addition, you need to check if the security type on your computer matches the security type on your router (also described above).

Additionally, toggle the option to connect automatically to your network to Off. This will allow you to input your new password.

What can I do to prevent these issues from occurring again?

➡ Keep your OS updated

Keeping your Windows 10 OS updated at all times not only protects you from encountering network issues but also keeps you safe.

Windows 10 downloading and installing updates

The latest Windows 10 release, updates the security features of your PC that will keep third parties away from your personal data, while also improving and fixing known bugs.

➡ Ensure that all drivers are updated constantly

Update menu for Network drivers in Device Manager

To achieve this, you should either regularly use the Device Manager to manually search for updates for each of the important drivers, or you can use automatic and specialized software to do this job for you.

➡ Keep your network login credentials accessible

Losing your network credentials is not a huge problem, but it is enough to cause you unnecessary stress when dealing with network issues.

If you have this information easily accessible, then you can first test out if the credentials were used correctly, and if not, simply contact your ISP provider for more details.

Dealing with network issues is never pleasant, especially if you were getting ready for a Netflix binge-watch session with your loved ones, or were requiring your Internet connection for online gaming.

There can be many causes that can result in your device not being able to connect to the Internet. We truly hope that our solutions have been helpful and that you’ve managed to resolve this issue.

If you want to have Windows Movie Maker on Windows 10, you need to install one of its subversions.

You can easily install M

ovie Maker fr Windows 10 if you follow our steps below.

Download Windows Movie Maker and enjoy a wide variety of video editing features.

The software is also versatile because it has versions compatible with multiple platforms.

Windows Movie Maker is a video editing software created by Microsoft. This software was first released as a part of Windows ME in 2000.

The next two versions of Windows both included Windows Movie Maker as a default application

Both versions saw many improvements and new features such as new transitions, support for Xbox 360 playback as well as support for DVR-MS file format.

In 2009 Microsoft changed the name of the application to Windows Live Movie Maker 2009, adding it to the Live Essentials suite.

Since Windows Live Movie Maker was new software, you couldn’t use it to work with projects created by previous versions of Movie Maker.

The new version removed many features – such as image stabilization and the ability to record voice-overs, and it also didn’t support custom XML transitions like its predecessors.

However, it added a new resigned ribbon toolbar similar to one from Microsoft Office, as well as an ability to export videos directly to DVDs or YouTube.

It’s worth mentioning that Windows Movie Maker captures video from a camera or any other device in one of the supported formats such as WMV/.ASF, .MPG (MPEG-1), .AVI (DV-AVI), .WMA, .WAV, and .MP3.

Formats such as MP4/3GP, FLV and MOV, and AAC are also supported, but in order to use them, you need to have the necessary codecs installed.

The last version of this tool was released in 2012, and since Microsoft isn’t actively developing Windows Movie Maker anymore, we decided to download it and see how it works on Windows 10.

If you’re looking to download Windows Media Encoder for Windows 10, you can do that by following this link.

In addition to transition effects you can also add visual effects as well. Although this tool has barely more than 20 visual effects, these effects should be enough for basic users.

It’s also worth mentioning that you can use multiple effects simultaneously for some interesting results.

You can also easily emphasize narration, video, or music, or choose not to emphasize anything. In addition, you can also change the aspect ratio between 16:9 and 4:3.

Of course, you can easily split or trim your clips, and add a starting or endpoint for them. You can also set sound fade in or fade out as well as the speed of playback.

After you’re done with video editing you can choose between several export profiles or create your own custom profile.

If you’re having some audio issues in Movie Maker on Windows 10, take a quick look here and you’ll certainly solve them.

Keep in mind that Windows Movie Maker has been discontinued and Microsoft no longer offers support for it. You will have to deal with any issues that may occur on your own.

How To Create A Windows 8.1 Full Backup (Step

Sadly Microsoft in Windows 8.1 is removing the Windows 7 backup tool that for years allowed users to create a full backup (or system image) of their PCs. This actually was a pretty handy tool among savvy users to backup Windows installation files, documents, device driver, desktop applications and even the new modern apps in Windows 8, to recover in case of hard drive failure, malware, and many other problems.

It was pretty obvious that Microsoft was eventually going to retire this tool, because when Windows 8 was released, the “Backup and Restore” feature was simply renamed to “Windows 7 File Recovery”, almost telling you to use this tool only for recovery purposes and nothing more.

The software giant may have many reasons for this decision, a few of those reasons could be that creating a system image can potentially carryover bad program installation, malware, and many other issues — or perhaps Microsoft understands that starting from scratch is the best solution –. But it seems that the main reason is because Windows 8 includes new recovery tools, such as Refresh your PC, Reinstall everything, File History, and SkyDrive which not only allows to store documents in the cloud, but also can store PC settings and roam them between all your Windows 8 devices.

Also let’s not forget the biggest problems around creating a full backup, it can fail for many reasons (e.g., file corruption, operation did not complete successfully and user won’t notice, etc.), and files won’t be up to date unless you perform a full backup hourly. But the biggest problem is that if the backup doesn’t work (which happen pretty often), it could become impossible to recover important personal files.

Even though you won’t find anymore the “Windows 7 File Recovery” option in Windows 8.1, the ability to create a full backup of your PC still possible with a combination of different tools and services. Now instead of having an easy to use dashboard to create a system image, you’ll have to perform this task using the Recimg command line tool, File History to backup files separately, and SkyDrive to backup PC settings (and even documents, if you choose so).

Yes, I know it seems rather a more time consuming operation and it is, but at least in many scenarios where recovery is necessary, you won’t need extra software and you’ll be able to restore everything with the latest version of all your important personal files.

In the step by step instructions below, we’ll go through how to create a Windows 8.1 system image, how to configure the image as a custom refresh point. We’ll also learn to use File History to backup your files, and finally you’ll learn to configure SkyDrive to sync PC settings to the cloud. Let’s start:

Instructions

2. Next type the following command and press Enter:

recimg /createimage C:Custom_Image_Refresh

Quick Tip: If you don’t have enough space in your hard drive, use an external USB drive to store the custom system image. If you proceed with this option, in the command mentioned above, change “C” with the drive letter of the external storage.

This far you created a custom system image of Windows 8.1 on the drive where Windows is installed (C:Custom_Image_Refresh), also using the above command will register the image for recovery when using the refresh feature. To verify if this is true, type the following command on the Command Prompt:

recimg /showcurrent

If after entering the command you get the message “There is no active custom recovery image. Error Code – 0x80070490”, you’ll need to register the recovery image manually with the following command:

recimg /setcurrent C:Custom_Image_Refresh

Where “C” is the drive where the image is stored.

Keep in mind that if the operating system does not find the the custom system image, it will fall back to the default image or installation media when a refresh is perform.

Important: You cannot use a custom recovery image to reset your PC, you can only use it to refresh.

Restoring your PC with a custom recovery image

Although using Recimg to create a custom recovery image, it doesn’t backup Windows 8 apps, documents, personal settings, or user profiles, because that information is preserved when you refresh your PC.

File History

Thus far you created a backup of the operating system and desktop applications, now the second part on creating a full backup of Windows 8.1 is to configure File History. This is a new tool in Windows 8 that basically allows you to backup all your files on the daily basis. To learn how to configure and use Time Machine like feature read the following guide: How to set up Windows 8 File History to backup your data (Step-by-Step).

Backing up PC settings with SkyDrive

Even though, refresh takes care of keeping moderns apps, user profiles, personal settings, you can also make sure these settings are safe off your PC. Thanks to the new deep integration of SkyDrive in Windows 8.1, you can sync personalization, modern apps, and other important settings in the cloud. To backup your settings, go to PC settings, SkyDrive, Sync settings, and make sure Sync settings on this PC is turned-on, and finally choose the settings you want to save in the cloud. (Remember that settings could take some time to sync, if you are enabling them for the first time.)

Wrapping up

Although, this process of full backup in Windows 8.1 does not create a bit-by-bit copy of your hard drive like it was possible in Windows 7, it does accomplish keeping your important files safe on the daily basis, it preserves desktop applications and modern apps, PC settings — basically everything.

If you think about it, this process actually makes more sense (in theory), because unless you do a full backup at least every week, the files to recover will always be out of date and many others files because of the time gap will not even get backed up making the recovery inconsistent.

The only problem I see with this process is that it will not protect your PC from hardware failure. But as it turns out there is a workaround, you can install a fresh copy of Windows 8.1 in a new hard drive, and then you can perform a refresh which will restore your previous installation with your desktop applications (e.g., Photoshop, iTunes, Google Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Office, Spotify, etc.) that you took so much time configuring.
