Apple’s latest iteration to its desktop operating system was announced at WWDC earlier this month. Named ‘macOS Mojave,’ the update brings with it a bevy of new features including some long-awaited things like the dark mode, and other features and cosmetic upgrades that are pretty nice. So, if you’re wondering how to get these features on a Windows 10 PC, well we’ve got your back.

Getting macOS Mojave features on Windows 10 is a relatively simple task, partly because a lot of these features are built into Windows, and partly because most of the apps you’ll need to get these features are easily available and free. So here’s how you can get each of the macOS Mojave features on Windows 10.

1. Dark Mode

The dark mode is easily the most requested feature of all time. While earlier versions of macOS featured a dark mode that was utterly useless, this time Apple has shipped a dark mode that’s worthy of the name and looks beautiful.

In Settings, go to Personalization.

Here, head over to ‘Colors.’

Scroll down and change the ‘Default app mode’ to ‘Dark.’

This will change all the app windows and stuff to shades of black and grey. However, things like the taskbar, and the Start Menu still remain as they were. However, if you scroll back up, you’ll find an option to pick color manually. Just select the darkest color you can find here, and the Start Menu and taskbar will both turn dark as well.

2. Dynamic Wallpaper

Yet another addition to macOS Mojave came in the form of Dynamic Wallpapers. These are basically wallpapers that change according to the time of the day. So the Mojave desert wallpaper that’s the default on macOS Mojave changes the lighting conditions of the photo from day time to afternoon to the evening and finally at night. It looks stunning.

Getting that exact feature on Windows 10 is currently not possible, but you can get something that comes pretty close.

Make a folder and make two copies of each of the wallpapers inside the folder.

Head over to Personalization settings, and from the ‘Background’ dropdown, choose ‘Slideshow.‘

Choose the folder you just made with the wallpapers, and set ‘change picture’ to ‘6 hours.’

Now, turn of shuffle, and enable ‘allow slideshow on battery power.’

What you’ve basically done is set the daytime and night-time wallpapers from macOS Mojave to automatically change every 12 hours giving off the illusion that it’s a dynamic wallpaper. Pretty neat, isn’t it?

3. Stacks

It’s nice, and fortunately you can get a similar functionality on Windows as well.

Install the app, and as soon as you’ve done all the set-up formalities such as creating a free account, Fences will automatically sort your desktop into neat folder-like things.

4. Quick Look

Quick Look is an awesome feature that I love using on my Mac. It allows me to quickly peek into a file, scrub through a video, check out the contents of a PDF, and all without opening the files in dedicated apps.

To get the same functionality on Windows, all you need is a free app.

Once you’ve done that, you’re ready to go. Simply select an image, file, or audio file, and press ‘Space’ to open it up in Quick Look.

Believe me, Quick Look is one feature that will get you addicted to using it. It’s really very useful. Plus, the Quicklook app on Microsoft Store is completely free, so there’s no harm in trying.

5. Screenshot Tool

If you want a similar feature on Windows, you’ll have to use an app called Tiny Take (free). You simply have to install the app on your Windows 10 PC and that’s it. Tiny Take brings a number of handy keyboard shortcuts to take screenshots, to record the screen, and to even record a video from the webcam.

Tiny Take also does this thing where after you take a screenshot it directly takes you into a handy editing app where you can perform some basic editing including things like annotation, cropping, and more.

If, however, you don’t want to install a third-party app, the latest builds of Windows 10 also include a keyboard shortcut ‘Windows + Shift + S’ to bring up a screenshot tool with a couple of basic options that should be enough for most people.

6. Finder Features

For Gallery View, all you need to do is:

Head over to the ‘View’ tab in Explorer.

Here, enable the ‘Preview Pane’ to get a Gallery View like view in Explorer.

The Quick Actions on macOS Mojave are a little harder to get, but Windows comes with contextual buttons as well. In a folder with images, you’ll get a ‘Picture tools’ inside Explorer with actions like rotate, set as background and more.

How To Enable Dark Mode On Macos (Big Sur, Catalina, Mojave)

The Dark Mode theme available in modern macOS versions offers a unique visual interface and desktop environment to work in, shifting nearly all onscreen visual elements to dark grays and blacks. For many Mac users, the Dark theme is perhaps the most popular new feature to arrive in MacOS Mojave, Catalina, and Big Sur, and the new user interface theme may be the sole reason that some Mac users update to the latest system software release.

You can easily enable Dark mode theme in MacOS while initially configuring MacOS, or you can switch between Dark mode and Light mode appearance at any time by adjusting the Mac OS system settings.

Note that being able to enable Dark Mode in MacOS requires macOS Mojave 10.14 or later, as earlier versions do not support the full Dark visual theme*.

How to Enable Dark Mode Theme on Mac

Pull down the  Apple menu and choose “System Preferences”

Select the “General” control panel

At the very top of the General settings, look for the “Appearance” section and then choose “Dark”

When finished, close out of System Preferences

The visual differences between Dark mode and Light mode are dramatic and very obvious immediately.

Much as it sounds, the Dark mode theme is very dark. Gone are the bright whites and light grays that have been the default appearance of MacOS for a while now, as they are basically inverted into blacks and deep dark grays. Many users really enjoy the appearance of Dark Mode on Mac OS, particularly for those who work at night or in a dimly lit area, or if you just find the bright white Light interface to be distracting or glaring.

You’ll also notice that the wallpaper background image changes depending on if you’re using Dark or Light theme, though you can change wallpaper images separately at any time too.

Similarly, the Light mode theme is very light. With many bright grays and bright white visual elements, this has been the default appearance of MacOS for quite some time in one respect or another (Mac OS X has had several distinct visual themes over the years, from aqua to brushed metal to beyond, with the most recently recognizable UI appearance change having arrived in Yosemite as the bright Light theme, and with the Dark theme option arriving in Mojave).

You can change from Dark theme to Light theme at any time by going to the System Preferences General settings and adjusting from there, and the effect is always immediate without requiring a system reboot or anything of that sort. Everything on screen just redraws into either the Dark appearance or the Light appearance, depending on which UI is set by the user.

There are a few other settings that can impact how the Dark appearance or Light Appearance may look in Mac OS, including disabling transparency effects in Mac OS interface, if you’re using the Increase Contrast setting, and adjusting the highlight color for what is selected on screen. Even your wallpaper can also change the appearance of Light and Dark appearances, if you have transparency effects enabled on the Mac.

Pull down the  Apple menu and choose “System Preferences”

At the very top of the General settings, look for the “Appearance” section and then choose “Light”

When finished, close out of System Preferences

Whether you prefer the Light mode theme or Dark mode theme, or perhaps both or either depending on the setting you’re working in or the time of day, is entirely a matter of personal preference. You can always try out the different appearance setting and if you don’t like it, switch back.

* Note that macOS High Sierra has a very broken dark theme that can be enabled but it’s not recommended, while other prior versions of MacOS can enable a dark menu bar and dark Dock appearance in Mac OS X, though the dark appearance won’t carry over to the other user interface elements on the Mac.

How To Get Android Oreo Features On Older Devices

Google has officially launched the Android 8.0 Oreo version which has already been rolled out to a few devices. This version of Android has some very good features that everyone would like to have, but unfortunately cannot on their old devices. If you are using an older phone that has no chance to get Android Oreo, here are some ways you can get Android Oreo’s features on your device.

Notification Snoozing

Android Oreo allows the user to snooze notifications and make them appear again later. On older devices you can install Boomerang Notifications. This is developed at Cardiff University and brings the notifications snoozing feature to your phone. Once installed, make sure you select the applications whose notifications you would like to snooze.

After completing the setup, go to your notifications window and swipe a notification. It will then send you a prompt, asking if you want to save the notification or get notified later.

Picture in Picture

This is a very nice feature on Android 8.0 that allows one to shrink something, like a video, into a small window that appears on top of other applications. This can be replicated on older phones with Floating Apps. It has a free version and a paid one that goes for $4.

Home Screen Menu Expanded and Notification Dots

Google’s Pixel Launcher comes with Android 8.0 in their Pixel phone. This launcher has a feature that enables you to see some dots or lines on application icons that enables you to know which applications have pending notifications. Apart from this feature, pressing and holding on an icon on the home screen allows you to see notifications there and still get any widgets related to the app.

These two features do not come in older devices, but you can get them by installing a launcher called Action Launcher. It has a free and paid version that costs almost $5. The Android Nougat release introduced the ability to have the display automatically adjust itself to have optimal reading at night. This app will give you the exact same features just like in Android 8.0.

Google Assistant is one of the most widely used voice assistants in the world. Although it supports a wide range of products including smartphones, smart displays, smart speakers, and other smart home devices, support for desktop PCs has always been a hassle. Google has not shown interest in bringing Assistant to desktops and laptops, with the exception of Chromebooks. If you’re someone who’s looking for a way to use Google Assistant on your Windows, macOS, or Linux machine, there’s good news. A Chennai-based developer Melvin. L. Abraham has built an unofficial cross-platform Google Assistant desktop client based on Google Assistant SDK. Today, we’ll be showing the steps involved to set it up and use Google Assistant on your PC.

The process to enable Google Assistant can seem a bit complicated at first glance. However, if you spare a few minutes to follow the steps, you can easily set it up and start using Google Assistant to control your PC. Another aspect worth mentioning is that this client is under development, and hence, you may experience occasional bugs while using it.

1. Register Device for Using Google Assistant on PC

You can use the app to issue a variety of basic voice commands, including searches, checking the weather, and smart home controls. On Windows machines, you can access the client with the keyboard shortcut ‘Windows+Shift+A.’

On the app’s settings page, you get the options to tweak several aspects of the app to suit your preference. For instance, you can choose to keep the app always on top of other apps for quick access. In case you want a light theme, you can switch themes from settings.

How To Run Unverified Apps On Macos

Apple would prefer you to only download approved apps from the App Store, but that isn’t always possible. If you find a suitable app online that hasn’t been approved for installation, macOS will block it from launching. This security feature is well-intended, but you’ll need to bypass it to install third-party apps.

Thankfully, it’s a pretty easy process to run unverified apps on a Mac. Before we begin, remember that this security measure exists for a reason. Only consider installing apps from sources you trust, or you may put your Mac at risk, even with Mac antivirus software installed.

Allow Unverified Apps In System Preferences

When you first attempt to open an app from an unverified developer, Apple will block it, displaying an alert box instead. macOS will always prevent apps it doesn’t recognize from launching without your approval.

It’s also possible that your macOS security settings prevent any apps from being launched that aren’t from the App Store. This includes apps from verified developers that have been downloaded from the internet directly.

If you’re unable to launch an unverified app (or a verified app that isn’t from the App Store), you’ll need to head to System Preferences. You can access this from your Dock directly, or launch it from within Launchpad. 

You’ll need to do this for each unverified app you launch, as Apple removed the option to automatically allow this in an earlier version of macOS. You’ll only need to do this for a particular app once, however. 

To install this unverified app, drag your app icon and drop it on the Applications shortcut in your Finder window. This will copy the app from your DMG image file to your macOS installation, allowing it to be accessed from Launchpad or from within the Applications folder in Finder.

Open Unverified Apps Without Installation

Among the many things that Finder allows you to do is the ability to view the contents of a DMG image file before you install an app. Rather than dragging your enclosed app to the (usually supplied) Applications shortcut, you can open the app straight from your DMG file instead without installing it.

Your app will launch at this point. As it won’t be installed on your system, you’ll need to repeat this process to launch it again once you close it.

Using Homebrew To Run Unverified Apps on Mac

While Apple would prefer you to install apps through the App Store, you can bypass it completely with Homebrew. The benefit of using Homebrew to install macOS apps is that it bypasses the security mechanisms that Apple uses to “protect” you from unverified apps. 

This is a double-edged sword, as while you’ll be able to install unverified apps, you’ll need to ensure that you only install apps and software that you trust.

Homebrew acts as a package manager in the same way that APT does on Linux. It allows you to install apps using the macOS terminal, either individually, or using it to create a bulk installer to install multiple apps at once. 

This might be useful to install multiple apps to new macOS devices, for instance.

Once you’ve located a suitable installation package for an app, you can type brew cask install appname, replacing appname with the app. For instance, to install Firefox, typing brew cask install firefox would download and install the relevant package for Firefox.
