Suggested March 2024 How To Get Android Oreo Features On Older Devices
Google has officially launched the Android 8.0 Oreo version which has already been rolled out to a few devices. This version of Android has some very good features that everyone would like to have, but unfortunately cannot on their old devices. If you are using an older phone that has no chance to get Android Oreo, here are some ways you can get Android Oreo’s features on your device.Notification Snoozing
Android Oreo allows the user to snooze notifications and make them appear again later. On older devices you can install Boomerang Notifications. This is developed at Cardiff University and brings the notifications snoozing feature to your phone. Once installed, make sure you select the applications whose notifications you would like to snooze.
After completing the setup, go to your notifications window and swipe a notification. It will then send you a prompt, asking if you want to save the notification or get notified later.Picture in Picture
This is a very nice feature on Android 8.0 that allows one to shrink something, like a video, into a small window that appears on top of other applications. This can be replicated on older phones with Floating Apps. It has a free version and a paid one that goes for $4.
Tap on the application you would like to float. In my case I have two applications, the calculator and the File Manager. The diagram below shows the two apps.WiFi Toggling
Android 8.0 comes with a very amazing WiFi toggling feature. It allows one to turn on and connect to a previously-connected WiFi network automatically whenever they are in range. With this feature you don’t have to keep your WiFi on all the time. The Smart WiFi Toggler brings this feature to older phones. Download this app from Google Play Store and enable it.Home Screen Menu Expanded and Notification Dots
Google’s Pixel Launcher comes with Android 8.0 in their Pixel phone. This launcher has a feature that enables you to see some dots or lines on application icons that enables you to know which applications have pending notifications. Apart from this feature, pressing and holding on an icon on the home screen allows you to see notifications there and still get any widgets related to the app.
These two features do not come in older devices, but you can get them by installing a launcher called Action Launcher. It has a free and paid version that costs almost $5. In the screenshots below take a look at applications like Play Store; they have a slight three lines symbol showing that there are notifications.Night Light Mode
The Android Nougat release introduced the ability to have the display automatically adjust itself to have optimal reading at night. However, Android 8.0 has an intensity fine-tuning that takes this feature a notch higher. To get similar features on any Android device, go to Google Play Store and install Twilight. This app will give you the exact same features just like in Android 8.0.
With the above-mentioned apps you can now enjoy Android Oreo’s features without your phone physically running Android 8.0. This is much better to have while waiting for the upgrade for your device to arrive.

You're reading How To Get Android Oreo Features On Older Devices
Apple’s latest iteration to its desktop operating system was announced at WWDC earlier this month. Named ‘macOS Mojave,’ the update brings with it a bevy of new features including some long-awaited things like the dark mode, and other features and cosmetic upgrades that are pretty nice. So, if you’re wondering how to get these features on a Windows 10 PC, well we’ve got your back.Get macOS Mojave Features on Windows 10
Getting macOS Mojave features on Windows 10 is a relatively simple task, partly because a lot of these features are built into Windows, and partly because most of the apps you’ll need to get these features are easily available and free. So here’s how you can get each of the macOS Mojave features on Windows 10.1. Dark Mode
The dark mode is easily the most requested feature of all time. While earlier versions of macOS featured a dark mode that was utterly useless, this time Apple has shipped a dark mode that’s worthy of the name and looks beautiful.
In Settings, go to Personalization.
Here, head over to ‘Colors.’
Scroll down and change the ‘Default app mode’ to ‘Dark.’
This will change all the app windows and stuff to shades of black and grey. However, things like the taskbar, and the Start Menu still remain as they were. However, if you scroll back up, you’ll find an option to pick color manually. Just select the darkest color you can find here, and the Start Menu and taskbar will both turn dark as well.2. Dynamic Wallpaper
Yet another addition to macOS Mojave came in the form of Dynamic Wallpapers. These are basically wallpapers that change according to the time of the day. So the Mojave desert wallpaper that’s the default on macOS Mojave changes the lighting conditions of the photo from day time to afternoon to the evening and finally at night. It looks stunning.
Getting that exact feature on Windows 10 is currently not possible, but you can get something that comes pretty close.
Download the macOS Mojave wallpapers from this link.
Make a folder and make two copies of each of the wallpapers inside the folder.
Head over to Personalization settings, and from the ‘Background’ dropdown, choose ‘Slideshow.‘
Choose the folder you just made with the wallpapers, and set ‘change picture’ to ‘6 hours.’
Now, turn of shuffle, and enable ‘allow slideshow on battery power.’
What you’ve basically done is set the daytime and night-time wallpapers from macOS Mojave to automatically change every 12 hours giving off the illusion that it’s a dynamic wallpaper. Pretty neat, isn’t it?3. Stacks
It’s nice, and fortunately you can get a similar functionality on Windows as well.
Install the app, and as soon as you’ve done all the set-up formalities such as creating a free account, Fences will automatically sort your desktop into neat folder-like things.4. Quick Look
Quick Look is an awesome feature that I love using on my Mac. It allows me to quickly peek into a file, scrub through a video, check out the contents of a PDF, and all without opening the files in dedicated apps.
To get the same functionality on Windows, all you need is a free app.
Once you’ve done that, you’re ready to go. Simply select an image, file, or audio file, and press ‘Space’ to open it up in Quick Look.
Believe me, Quick Look is one feature that will get you addicted to using it. It’s really very useful. Plus, the Quicklook app on Microsoft Store is completely free, so there’s no harm in trying.5. Screenshot Tool
If you want a similar feature on Windows, you’ll have to use an app called Tiny Take (free). You simply have to install the app on your Windows 10 PC and that’s it. Tiny Take brings a number of handy keyboard shortcuts to take screenshots, to record the screen, and to even record a video from the webcam.
Tiny Take also does this thing where after you take a screenshot it directly takes you into a handy editing app where you can perform some basic editing including things like annotation, cropping, and more.
If, however, you don’t want to install a third-party app, the latest builds of Windows 10 also include a keyboard shortcut ‘Windows + Shift + S’ to bring up a screenshot tool with a couple of basic options that should be enough for most people.6. Finder Features
For Gallery View, all you need to do is:
Head over to the ‘View’ tab in Explorer.
Here, enable the ‘Preview Pane’ to get a Gallery View like view in Explorer.
The Quick Actions on macOS Mojave are a little harder to get, but Windows comes with contextual buttons as well. In a folder with images, you’ll get a ‘Picture tools’ inside Explorer with actions like rotate, set as background and more.

While Apple has made the Siri functionality available for older Macs, the company has not made the “Hey Siri” activation function available for all the Macs that support Siri. If you own an old Mac, you would know you have Siri but you do not have access to the “Hey Siri” hands-free command on your machine. Fortunately, though, you have a workaround to get access to the Siri’s hands-free command even on your old Mac.
The workaround uses the dictation feature on your Mac to let you call Siri with your voice. Essentially, by setting “Hey” as a wake phrase and “Siri” as the word to invoke the launch of Siri, you are able to speak to the virtual assistant naturally.
The following is a multi-step procedure to follow to get things running on your machine. How to Enable Hey Siri on Old Macs
As mentioned earlier, you are going to be using the dictation feature on your Mac to activate Siri. The dictation feature will listen to your voice and send an appropriate command to launch the Siri app on your machine.
When I say – Siri
While using – Any Application
Go ahead and say “Hey Siri,” and Siri will launch and be ready to assist you on your Mac. You can ask her the usual Siri commands, and she will answer you.Using Other Invocation Words
You can, of course, set this up for any other application, too. Instead of “Siri,” set the invocation word as the name of the application you wish to launch.
Now, stating “Hey Adobe Premiere Pro” will launch Premiere Pro. On the other hand, stating “Hey Siri, launch Adobe Premiere Pro” would also do the same thing – just with the Siri interface we had set up previously. Conclusion
Getting the Hey Siri functionality on older Macs is pretty easy, all thanks to the built-in dictation feature on the Mac. We hope the above guide helps you enable the functionality so you can launch Siri with your voice on your Mac.

Notifications play a very important role in the modern day gadgets, including Android mobile devices and tablets. Android Notification Center is super cool — in fact, super super cool on Nougat! — that is loaded with amazing features like notifications from similar apps grouped under one tab, and the ability to hide notifications from the prying eyes on the lock screen.
Notifications are extremely helpful, as one doesn’t have to open the App repeatedly to check what’s new. In a normal scenario, when you get notifications, they start accumulating in the notification center until you either swipe it to discard it or tap the notification to open the app.
Imagine the catastrophe if you accidentally press the ‘clear all’ button in the notification center and all your notifications are removed from the notification center in a snap, before you realize you had one or two important notifications to check out.
Are you guilty of accidentally deleting your notification history? Shhh! Me too.
Don’t worry! There is an easy way out that helps to access and recover the lost notifications by using Android Notification History Log. It lists all the recent notification history in chronological order. However, this method only works in devices above 4.3 Android Jellybean, which is not worrying as unless you have been living under rock for past 2-3 years, your device shall be running at least KitKat (Android 4.4), at the time when we’re loving sweetness called Nougat, which is Android 7.0.
How to recovery lost notifications on Android
Let me explain how to recover deleted notifications.
Step 1. Go to your home screen and long touch on empty space to add a widget. (In case your current launcher doesn’t support it, try Nova launcher from the Play Store.)
Step 2. Tap on the ‘Widgets’.
Step 3. Find the a widget with the name ‘Settings shortcut’ or simple ‘Settings’. Basically Android Settings/System app has this feature.
Step 4. Touch and drag the Settings shortcut widget to your home screen.
Step 5. In the menu that appears, scroll down and tap ‘Notification Log’.
Step 6. You will find a shortcut with the name ‘Notification Log’ on your home screen. Tap it to open it.
You can now find all your notifications in this sweet shortcut here, which lists your notification log, so that you can access notificaitons even if you accidentally cleared them in the notification center.
However, some device manufacturers, like Samsung, don’t support notification log. Does that mean you cannot access deleted notifications on your Samsung device? Nope!
After all, there is an app for that, too!
To access lost notifications on Samsung, download 3rd party apps from Google Play Store like:
Instead of using inbuilt bland Notification Log you can use these enthralling Notification history apps on any Android phones, whether that be of Samsung or any other OEM.
The apps provide additional features like themes, grouping past notifications by apps, exclude app from the notification log, search through notifications, and export as CSV among other delightful features.
I personally prefer Past Notifications app as the app is lightweight and allows you to exclude an app from the notification log, or even group together notifications from the same app in the notification history.
However, if you want to search the notifications and export it as CSV you should try Notif Saver App.
How to check out cleared notifications on Android devices, including Samsung devices
We are gonna use the ‘Past notifications’ app for this. This would work on all Android devices, including Samsung devices for which the above method that included widget shortcut for ‘Notification log’ under Android’s Settings, is not available.
Here’s how to go about it.
Step 1. Download and install Past Notifications from the Google Play Store.
Step 2. Open the App. You will get a pop up asking you to enable Notification listener. Tap OK.
Step 3. You are redirected to Notification access screen. Enable PastNotifications from the list.
Step 4. Press Back key, and you will be back into the app. Now, you will find your current notifications (if any) listed under history. As well as all notifications that appear from now on in the notifications shade.
Tips for Past Notifications app
Tap any notification and select IGNORE from the bottom bar to add it to the ignored list. The notifications from the said App will no longer be listed under the History Tab.
FYI, you will continue to receive the notifications from the ignored Apps in your Notification center as before, and nothing will change there.
Note: While the inbuilt Notification log shows the old notifications as well –the notifications that existed before adding it to the home screen, the 3rd party Apps can’t because they start accessing your notificaitons after you install them and use for the first time.
Do let us know of your thoughts on it.
Android Features That Are Yet To Come On iPhone USB Access & File Manager
Accessing your files and folders is easy when it comes to Android. All you need to do is connect your Android device to your computer using a USB cable. You can copy, move and perform other file operations with ease.
However, on iOS devices, it is different when you connect it to your computer. As you can only check camera contents.
However, you can access all files on Android with the help of the file manager. Also, you can perform all the file operations such as copying a file, moving a file, deleting a file on your Android. There are many File managers available on the Play Store.
This makes a device simple and easy to use, which is missing on the iPhone.Rise To Wake Versus Glance
Then comes this feature on Android, where you can turn the phone’s display on with a simple glance. You can check time, date, notifications and more, awesome isn’t it?
This feature is quite new and available with flagship phones. You can also disable the feature in case you don’t want it.
Though both of the platforms make accessibility better but glancing on the screen is better than picking a phone to turn on the display.Multiple Users
If you have Android 5.0 or above, then you can allow another user to access their information, apps, without messing up the main user account and settings.
Also, you can hand over your phone to anyone which the hesitation of other people accessing personal information, by using Guest Mode. With this mode, a guest user can perform simple functions without your alerting anything on the primary account.
This is what Android can do, but when it comes to the iPhone, there is no such thing as a secondary account or guest mode. As iPhone is not meant for multiple users. However, on iPad, it could be useful to have multiple user accounts.Default App Choices
When it comes to setting a default browser, Android takes the cookie in this category as well. Whenever you download a browser on Android, a prompt lets you set it as default for opening links. You can also set default apps for messaging app, phone app, keyboard, digital assistant and many more. Also, you can change them anytime you like.
Wherein on iPhone, you can download other browsers but are not given the option to set it as default. Similarly, you can’t set keyboard preferences as well.Customize Your Home Screen
The customization is another aspect which iOS doesn’t have. In iOS, you can only change the place of icons and group them in folders to organize your home screen neatly. Wherein on Android, along with arranging and grouping icons, you can revamp the entire home screen by adding widgets. Also, there are various Android launchers available in Google Play Store which changes the entire home screen layout.
So, these are some of the features which Android has and therefore make it more user-oriented then Apple. We are not saying iOS is not a worthy platform, but there are certain limitations to the user accessibility.Quick Reaction:

How to download the correct firmware file
This is an important part!
Be sure to check and find the correct model no. of your Galaxy A5. Then, based on your device’s model no., look for the appropriate firmware build from above.
Now that you know the model no., download the latest firmware from above for that model no. exactly.
Next, install the firmware on your Galaxy A5 by following the guide linked right below.
How to install a firmware
First, read our disclaimer, then take backup and then follow the guide below to install the firmware.
Disclaimer: Installing an official firmware through Odin doesn’t void your device’s warranty, but it remains an unofficial process and thus you need to be cautious of it. In any case, you only are responsible for your device. We won’t be liable if any damage occurs to your device and/or its components.
Backup, backup, backup! Create an appropriate backup of contacts, pictures, videos, songs and other important files stored on your device before proceeding with the steps below, so that in case something goes wrong you’ll have a backup of all your important files. Sometimes, firmware installation may delete everything on your device! Like, when you change the CSC of your device, knowingly or not.
Step-by-step Firmware Installation Guide
Let’s see how to install the firmware on your Galaxy A5. Make sure you have more than 30% battery on your device.
Step 1. Make sure you have downloaded the correct firmware file on your PC. See above for how to download correct firmware file for your Galaxy A5 and download links.
Step 3. Also, download Odin PC software (latest version).
Step 5. Extract the Odin file. You should get the Odin exe file (other files could be hidden, hence not visible).
Step 6. Disconnect your Galaxy A5 from PC if it is connected.
Step 7. Boot into download mode:
Power off your device. Wait for 6-7 seconds after screen goes off.
Press and hold the three buttons Volume down + Home + Power together until you see the Warning screen.
Press Volume Up to continue to download mode.
Step 9. Connect your device now using the USB cable. Odin should recognize your device. It’s a must. When it recognizes, you will see Added!! message appearing in the Log box in the bottom left, and the first box under ID:COM will also show a no. and turn its background blue. Look at the pic below.
You cannot proceed until you get the Added!! message, which confirms that Odin has recognized your device.
If you don’t get Added!! message, you need to install/re-install drivers again, and use the original cable that came with the device. Mostly, drivers are the problem (look at step 2 above).
You can try different USB ports on your PC too.
Load the firmware files(s) on your device. This depends on how many files you got in step 4 above upon extracting the firmware .zip file.
Case 1: If you got a single .tar/.tar.md5 file, then load this into AP tab of your Odin software. Then go to next step.
Case 2: If you got more than one .tar/.tar.md5 file, then you must be having files starting with AP, CSC, Home_CSC, BL, CP, etc. stuff. In this case, choose the files as follows. Select the firmware files as follows.
About CSC file: Using the HOME_CSC file won’t reset your device, and data on the phone shouldn’t be deleted. However, when we select regular CSC file, and it results in CSC on the device being different than that in CSC file, your phone will be formatted automatically. You can even choose to ignore loading the CSC file, that may do alright too. But if it doesn’t work out, repeat the whole process and select CSC file this time around.
Info: When you load files, Odin checks the md5 of firmware file, which takes time. So, simply wait until that’s done and the firmware file is loaded. Don’t worry if Odin gets unresponsive for a while, it’s normal. Binary size will also show up in Odin.
Go back to Log tab now, as it will show the progress of firmware installation when you hit the start button in next step.
Wait till installation is finished, after which your device will reboot automatically. You’ll get PASS message as shown below upon successful installation from Odin.
Some errors you may run into, and with respective solution.
If Odin gets stuck at setup connection, then you need to do this all again. Disconnect your device, close Odin, boot device into download mode again, open Odin, and then select the file and flash it again as said above.
If you get FAIL in the top left box, then also you need to flash the file again as stated just above.
That’s it. Let device restart automatically.
You can use the firmware for a variety of purposes, which includes:
Fix your Galaxy A5 if it’s giving you force closes errors and restarts randomly.
Unbrick your Galaxy A5 if it’s bootlooping and stuck at logo when restarting.
Go Back to Stock on your Galaxy A5 — helps when looking to sell the device, or fix installing OTA updates if broken.
Restore Galaxy A5 to factory state.
Upgrade your Galaxy A5 to newer Android version.
Downgrade your Galaxy A5 to lower build no. at same Android version.
Unroot your Galaxy A5.
Remove custom recovery like TWRP and CWM, if installed, on your Galaxy A5.
