Why you might consider editing from a NAS

As you grow as a video editor, you’ll likely get to the point where storage becomes a real issue that you have to address. With the rapid increase in camera quality, project file sizes continue to grow at a fast clip.

When you have individual projects that regularly eclipse the one terabyte mark, it might be time to consider a more dense working-storage solution for your videos — that’s why products like LumaForge’s excellent JellyFish lineup exists.

However, if you’re looking for something more affordable, you might try a Network Attached Storage solution (NAS). I’m a big fan of Synology and have been using its NAS products for years, so it felt natural to migrate some of my editing workflow to these machines.

10GbE connectivity

If you decide to go the NAS route, I recommend acquiring one with built-in 10GbE connectivity, or at least a NAS that’s capable of being upgraded after the fact with a 10GbE NIC like the DS1618+.

Working with Final Cut Pro X libraries over a basic Gigabit Ethernet connection is a non-starter and will only end up frustrating you. Make sure that you go the 10GbE route, and that your Mac has the ability to connect to a 10GbE network either via a Thunderbolt 3 dongle, or via a built-in 10GbE network interface like the iMac Pro and the Mac mini have.

Prior to configuration

If you try to save or open a Final Cut Pro X library on an Synology NAS that hasn’t been configured properly, you’ll receive the following frustrating error message: Unsupported volume type – Choose a local, SAN, or supported SMB location.

The good news is that with just a few simple configuration changes, you can enable Final Cut Pro X library storage directly on your Synology NAS.

Before getting started, make sure that you’ve updated Synology DSM to the latest version. Apple requires machines to be running Samba 4.3.4 or later in order to use shared storage with Final Cut Pro X.

How to configure your NAS to work with Final Cut Pro X

Note: this is just a default walkthrough. There are additional optimizations that we will explore in a future tutorial. It also may be wiser to use the nfs protocol for communication, as explained on a prior tutorial.

In this tutorial, I’m starting with a fresh installation of DSM (Disk Station Manager) on my Synology DS1618+. Although I noted how important 10GbE is, this machine doesn’t yet have a 10GbE card installed. My other Synology, a DS1817, does have a dual 10GbE NIC, and that’s what I currently work with. For the sake of this tutorial, I thought it would be best to begin with a fresh install in order to walk you through the setup process.

Perform the following operations via DSM on your Synology NAS

Step 1: Create a new volume and shared folder on your NAS to store your Final Cut Pro X library.

Step 4: On the same File Services page, disable AFP and NFS if enabled. Note some services may require these protocols, such as Time Machine. If you don’t require AFP or NFS, it’s best to keep them disabled.

Perform the following operations in a Terminal window on macOS

You can find the IP address of your Synology NAS via the System Health widget in DSM or via Control Panel → Network → Network Interface tab.

Step 6: If you receive a message stating “are you sure you want to continue to connect?” type yes and press Return on your keyboard.

Step 7: At the password prompt, enter the password that you normally use to log in to your Synology NAS and press Return. You should now be successfully logged into to your NAS.

Step. 8: Type sudo -i and press Return on your keyboard. Reenter your password and press Return on your keyboard. You should now have root access.

Step 9: Type cd /etc/samba and press Return on your keyboard.

Step 10: Type vim smb.conf to open the smb configuration file in the Vim text editor.

Step 11: Page down or use the down arrow on your keyboard to move the cursor to the line that says passdb backend=smbpasswd press the ‘i’ key on your keyboard, and press Return to insert a new line.

Step 12: On the new line, type the following: vfs objects=catia,fruit,streams_xattr be sure to include the commas. This is taken directly from Apple’s Use shared storage with Final Cut Pro X support page, but this excellent reddit post helped me to understand that commas were necessary.

Step 13: Press the ESC key on your keyboard and type :wq! and press Return on your keyboard. This will save the changes made to the chúng tôi file and exit Vim.

Step 14: Restart the smb daemon by typing restart smbd and press Return on your keyboard.

Step 15: Exit the Terminal window.

Just because you can store your  FCP X libraries on your NAS doesn’t mean that you should automatically do so. You’ll need to closely analyze your particular editing needs, storage requirements, along with the type of video that you plan to edit, in order to make sure it’s a wise decision.

Editing from a NAS is certainly doable, but a simple external SSD, or a direct attached Thunderbolt 3 storage solution may be a better choice for your circumstance. That said, if you already own a Synology NAS, have access to 10GbE, and have plenty of storage to spare, it’s worth looking into.

How To Get A Refund On Itunes Or App Store Purchases

When can you request a refund from iTunes or App Store?

Apple is generous with refunds if you don’t break some rules. According to Apple, you can request a refund if:

You don’t have pending payments or unpaid orders tagged to your debit card or Apple Pay Cash.

Apple has approved the charge on the said service or app, and it’s no more pending.

You mistakenly subscribed to a service or never intended to buy an app.

Your kid purchased the service without your consent.

Your purchase failed to work as you expected.

Apple may accept other reasons for requesting a refund. But the above are the standards. However, Apple might not refund if you request it 14 days after the purchase. Also, they might decline your request if they think it’s not valid or appears fraudulent.

And to add to this, you can refund in-app purchases only if you use iOS 15 and later. This is because previous iOS versions create a bottleneck as they don’t provide refund control for developers. 

So, it might be time to update your iOS version if you haven’t already.

How to request a refund from Apple

There are a few ways to request a refund of your iTunes or App Store purchases from Apple. You can do this on your iPhone, iPad, Android, PC, or Mac.

However, as of writing, the only way to request a refund from Apple is via a web browser like Safari or Google Chrome. The process is pretty much the same across all devices. But you’ll see how to go about it on mobile and computer.

So whatever device you choose will work, provided it has internet access and a web browser. And all you need is your Apple ID and password.

Request a refund via Mac or PC

First, open the Safari browser on your Mac computer or Google Chrome (if you’re using a PC). Next, go to Apple’s Report a Problem page and sign in with your Apple ID:

Sign in with your Face ID or Apple ID.

Intel’s goal for 2024 is simple: try to break its reliance on PCs.

That’s because the PC market isn’t the money-spinner it once was for the chip maker. As desktop and laptop shipments fall, so also are Intel’s overall chip shipments and revenue.

To be sure, the Client Computing Group (CCG)– which deals in PC and mobile chips — remains Intel’s largest business and generates the most revenue. But Intel is pivoting to adjacent growth markets such as data centers, the Internet of Things and memory, which the company hopes will ultimately provide revenue exceeding that of PCs.

Intel’s Data Center Group (DCG), IoT and memory divisions generated 40 percent of the company’s revenue in the 2024 financial year. That will grow even more in 2024, said Brian Krzanich, CEO of Intel, during a fourth quarter earnings call on Thursday.

Intel reported revenue of US$14.9 billion in the fourth quarter of 2024, growing by 1 percent year-over-year, while profit was up 1 percent at $3.6 billion. CCG revenue was $8.8 billion, declining by 1 percent. Revenue for DCG in contrast grew 5 percent to $4.3 billion while the revenue of the IoT group was up 6 percent to $625 million.

The company will continue to drive innovation in the PC business, but it won’t be the sole driver of the company’s growth in 2024, Krzanich said.

“Our future as a company will increasingly be the virtuous cycle of opportunities in the data center, memory and IoT market segments,” Krzanich said.

This strategy is similar to one adopted by AMD, when it saw the writing on the wall and made a strategic move away from PCs. AMD in 2013 diversified into new areas like semi-custom chips, delivering specialized processors for servers, embedded devices and gaming consoles like PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. AMD’s custom-chip revenue exceeded its PC chip revenue in its most recent fiscal quarter.

Intel doesn’t want to put all its eggs in one basket, so it is diversifying, said Patrick Moorhead, principal analyst at Moor Insights and Strategy.

Intel will always care about the PC market, but the company is investing more in growth businesses, Moorhead said.

The PC market is declining due to slower upgrade cycles and reduced demand. Worldwide shipments totaled 71.9 million units in the fourth quarter of 2024, declining by 10.6 percent year-over-year, according to IDC. According to Intel, desktop shipments declined by nine percent in 2024 compared to 2014. Laptop shipments were down 10 percent. The prices of PCs went up in 2024, which helped cut some losses.

DCG — which deals in server chips — is Intel’s second-largest business and most profitable unit. Analyst TBR predicted double-digit revenue growth for DCG in 2024, driven by growth in server chip shipments and high-performance computing products.

Demand for server processors was strong in the communications and cloud markets during the fourth quarter, Krzanich said.

Intel is shipping Broadwell-based server chips in the first quarter this year. The company will also start shipping samples of its server chips with Altera’s FPGAs (field programmable gate arrays) — which are reprogrammable chips — to select cloud customers this quarter. Intel closed the $16.7 billion acquisition of Altera on Dec. 28.

Intel this year will also release a new class of memory and storage called Optane for PCs and servers, which the company claims can be 10 times denser than DRAM, and 1,000 times faster and durable than flash storage.

Intel has unsuccessfully tried to diversify into the smartphone and tablet market. Intel’s Atom chips are in a handful of smartphones and were in million of tablets that shipped in 2024, but the company has lost billions of dollars in the chase.

How To Fix Google Play Store Not Working On Chromebook

With the help of the Google Play Store you can download Android apps on your Chromebook. You don’t need to use any workaround to use Google Play Store as it is officially available from Google. However, many users often experience issues with the Play Store on Chromebook. For instance, users can’t download apps from the Google Play Store app or the Play Store randomly stops functioning. Some even get error codes 7, 8, or downloading pending, etc., while using the Store. If you are experiencing a similar issue with the Play Store, try the following solutions to fix this problem on your Chromebook.

1. Check Compatibility With Your Chromebook

Currently, Google Play Store doesn’t work on all Chromebooks. It’s available on some laptops only.

If you don’t see the Google Play Store app on your Chromebook or it appears grayed out, you must first investigate whether your Chromebook supports Google Play Store or not. Check this official list to see if you can install Android apps on your laptop.

2. Restart Your Chromebook

The first thing that you must do if Google Play Store isn’t working properly on your Chromebook is to restart it. However, you shouldn’t just close the lid and open it up back again. You will have to restart the Chromebook in a proper manner as shown below.

Your Chromebook will start shutting down. Once it turns off completely, use the physical “Power” button to turn on the Chromebook again.

3. Check Internet Connection

If the Google Play Store screen appears blank or apps don’t seem to load, there could be an issue with the Chromebook’s internet connection. To confirm, launch the Chrome browser and open any website. If the website also doesn’t open, then definitely your internet is to be blamed. Try using a different Wi-Fi connection or connect using your mobile’s hotspot.

4. Enable Play Store on Your Chromebook

From there go to “Apps”.

You will see the “Google Play Store” or “Install apps and games from Google Play on your Chromebook” option. Enable the toggle next to it if available.

Furthermore, please note that not all apps will work with your Chromebook. If an app doesn’t show up when you search for it or it says incompatible, that means it can’t run on your device.

Note: If you don’t see the Play Store option, then either your Chromebook doesn’t support it or it has been disabled by your Chromebook’s administrator at your school or workplace.

5. Sign Out of Guest Accounts

If you are logged in as a guest user, then you cannot install or uninstall apps from your Chromebook, as the Google Play Store will not show up in the Guest profiles. You must log out and sign in to a normal profile to use a Google account.

6. Create a New User Profile

If nothing seems to fix the Play Store not working on your Chromebook, you must create a new user profile on your device and try using Google Play Store in it.

If Google Play Store works properly in the new profile, something is wrong with your existing profile. You should probably switch to this new profile and delete the old one.

7. Clear Cache for Google Play Store

Similar to Android, you must try clearing cache for Google Play Store on Chromebook as well. This is a well-known fix to resolve issues when the Play Store keeps crashing or stopping.

Open “Settings” on your Chromebook.

Go to “Apps” .

On the right side, select “Manage your apps”.

Hit the “Clear cache” button.

8. Run Chromebook Diagnostics

Chrome OS offers a built-in tool to detect problems with Chromebook’s CPU, memory, or other components. You must run the “Diagnostics” tool to detect such issues as they could be affecting Play Store.

The date and time must be correct on your Chromebook in order for Play Store to function properly. If your Chromebook has an incorrect date and time, you will face issues with Play Store or the apps downloaded from Play Store.

Select “Set automatically”.

10. Uninstall Third-Party Apps or Extensions

Did you recently install any app or extension on your Chromebook? If yes, that could be causing issues in Play Store. Try uninstalling the app or extension to see if Play Store starts working properly or not.

Google Play Store will not work properly if there’s a bug in Chrome OS or if you are using an old version. Generally, Chrome OS will download the update automatically, but you must manually check and install Chrome OS to fix issues with Play Store.

You must also try updating Play Store on your Chromebook.

Open Play Store on your Chromebook and tap on the profile picture icon at the top-right corner.

13. Remove Google Play Store

Next, you must try re-installing Play Store on your Chromebook. This should fix any bug that could be causing issues with Play Store.

Go to “Settings→ Apps→ Google Play Store”.

A confirmation pop-up will show up warning you that removing “Play Store” will uninstall any apps downloaded from it. If you are okay with that, tap on “Remove Android apps”.

Restart your Chromebook.

Then, follow the steps in section 4 to enable the Play Store once again.

14. Factory Reset Chromebook

Lastly, if nothing fixes your Play Store issue, you might want to perform a factory resetting (powerwash) on your Chromebook. Please note that this operation will erase all data on your device. So make sure to back up the data first as you will have to set up the Chromebook like a new device.
