Amazon and Intel team up against Google in IoT

Amazon and Intel are teaming up to spread Alexa, with stronger voice control skills as well as faster ways for third-parties to build devices with the assistant baked in. The news, announced at Amazon’s AWS-focused re:Invent conference this week, sees Intel renew its efforts to get its silicon into places where, traditionally at least, you might expect to find ARM-based processors. However it’s also a big deal to Amazon, which faces stronger competition from Google and others in the smart home.

Their plan is fairly straightforward. On the one hand, it’s about making Alexa more capable, with Intel adding Alexa skills support to its Smart Home Hub platform. That means voice control over connected devices like lighting, locks, appliances, and other technologies.

It’s something Alexa can do in part today, using the integrations with Philips’ Hue lighting, SmartThings’ hub, and other devices, but Amazon and Intel are aiming to make it a whole lot more streamlined. That’ll begin from the point of setup, where Alexa will be able to guide users through installation and connection of Internet of Things (IoT) gadgets by voice, but also extend to everyday use. “This will allow end users to interact more naturally with the technology in their homes,” Ted Karczewski, Alexa Voice Services content marketing manager at Amazon, says of the partnership.

However, the second phase is about putting Alexa into more places, and making it easier for third-party device manufacturers to get up and running with Amazon’s virtual assistant. The two firms are cooking up a reference design for smart speakers, effectively a blueprint for the various hardware elements a successful Echo-like unit would include. That includes speakers and microphone arrays, so as to enable successful voice recognition from a distance.

It also covers the array of radios and wireless standards required in the current, fairly fragmented smart home. Along with WiFi and Bluetooth, there’ll be support for ZigBee and Z-Wave, which are both widely used by connected devices for their low power requirements and mesh networking support. Intel’s design would include sufficient flexibility that manufacturers building products based on the reference could add various sensors for monitoring environmental conditions, together with video if they see fit.

Meanwhile, there’ll be extended support for the Alexa SDK which allows existing connected devices to be linked in with Amazon’s cloud-based processing. According to the firms, the first reference design will be available in the first quarter of 2023.

What’s interesting is that, even as Amazon looks to extend its reach into third-party hardware, it’s also reportedly looking to push the boundaries on its own range. While the 2nd-generation Echo Dot effectively took the original Echo and shrank it down – both in terms of physical size and the device’s price – leaks suggest Amazon is also investigating ways of augmenting voice-alone on future products. A new model is rumored to include a display for giving visual feedback in addition to spoken results.

Whether that will be sufficient to give Amazon an edge as Google pushes its own assistant and Google Home remains to be seen. The air-freshener-esque Google Home doesn’t have a display of its own, but it can tap into screens in the house that have been equipped with Chromecast dongles. Amazon is yet to do something similar with its own Fire TV Stick, though the latest iteration of that does have some Alexa control using a microphone on the Bluetooth remote.

Men’s Basketball Goes Up against Vermont in Season Home Opener Looking to maintain momentum after nail-biting first game win

The Terriers came away with a 77-74 win over Northeastern on Tuesday night after overcoming a 12-point deficit in the second half.

For the past nine seasons, the Boston University men’s basketball team has faced Northeastern in the season opener, and every year it’s been a close game. This year was no different, as BU overcame a 12-point second-half deficit to beat their Beantown rivals, 77-74.

Now with that nail-biting tip-off behind them, the Terriers are looking to prove that their resiliency in the season opener was no fluke when they host Vermont Friday night.

“I’m excited right now because this may be the hardest working team we’ve had, in terms of guys putting extra work into their game outside of practice,” head coach Joe Jones says. “There’s a higher level of love for the game of basketball right now than I’ve seen in the past.”

Last season, the Terriers found themselves stuck in the middle of the pack—a fifth-place finish in the Patriot League—after injuries to starters Cedric Hankerson (Questrom’16, MET’18) and Walter Whyte (CGS’19) plagued the end of the regular season. When they returned, BU won three in a row, only to get crushed by Bucknell, 90-59, in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals.

Starting this season, those injury bugs are back: Whyte, again, is expected to be out for four to six weeks with a bone bruise on the left foot—the same injury that sidelined him last February.

“We’re kind of used to it,” Jones says. “It’s next guy up. We’re just trying to focus on guys that are healthy and trying to make sure that guys who aren’t healthy are getting everything they need, so we can try to get them back as fast as we can.”

With the graduation of a Bucknell superstar trio that included the last two conference Players of the Year, the Patriot League is considered wide open this season. The Terriers were picked to slide up a spot and finish fourth in the preseason poll, but the coach’s expectations are a lot higher.

“We’re expected to win championships here,” Jones says. “That’s what we all play for.”

After losing six players and adding seven—six freshmen and a junior walk-on—the Terriers enter the season with a completely different roster. In the season opener, it didn’t take long to realize that Jones was still figuring out how to manage his rotation and who deserves playing time: in the game’s first eight minutes, all 11 players had already been on the court.

“We are not approaching this like we’re young,” Jones says. “We will never use that as an excuse, and they know that.” He says that in his head, he understands that things are going to take time. “I think you might have some more patience, but the expectations are expectations.”

With tricaptain Kamali Chambers (CGS’17, COM’19) the lone senior on the roster, BU is as young as a team can get, and that means underclassmen have to step up.

The freshmen played a combined 91 minutes on Tuesday, in part because of the experienced players’ foul troubles. Tricaptain Tyler Scanlon (CAS’20) says their progress has been remarkable.

“You get to see progress from our first practice on September 25 through now, and you’ll see throughout the season that these guys literally learn things every day,” Scanlon says. “They’re learning so fast, and I’ve been impressed with a lot of the guys. They’ve adapted really quickly.”

Redshirt freshman Alex Vilarino (CAS’20) says the group has a single-minded focus on improving: “We’re just trying to be the best group that we can possibly be as a whole and trying to do special things here,” he says.

Without a lot of veteran leadership, that everyday attitude of hard work will be the key to success, players say. It can be difficult, especially with such a young roster, adjusting not only to the physicality of college basketball, but also to the mental component that comes with the season’s grind.

“Staying even-keeled and keeping the same attitude regardless of your circumstances is really important—staying level-headed and ready to go,” Scanlon says.

“You’ve just got to bring it every day,” Chambers adds. “And that’s not just game to game. That’s every day at practice. We’ve just got to compete.”

The BU men’s basketball team hosts Vermont tonight, Friday, November 9, at 7 pm, at Case Gymnasium, 285 Babcock St. Admission is free for students with a sports pass, $5 for students without a sports pass, $7 for faculty and staff, and $12 for the general public. The Patriot League Network will broadcast the game live.

Ford and Google have inked a deal on connected cars, with new models set to get Android-powered dashboards, while Team Upshift will be a new collaborative group to explore new ways to build, connect, and sell cars, SUVs, and trucks. Meanwhile, the Google Cloud will be Ford’s preferred cloud provider – though not its only cloud provider – with implications for owners, dealers, and the automaker as it begins production of new models.

From 2023, we’ll see the first Ford and Lincoln models to use Android in the dashboard. That will include the Google Assistant for voice control, Google Maps for navigation, and access to the Google Play store for third-party apps and services tailored to in-vehicle use.

We’ve seen Android Automotive OS used this way already, of course, with Volvo and Polestar already having vehicles relying on the car-centric platform in dealerships. GM and other automakers have announced plans to adopt the system, too. Unlike Android Auto, which projects a smartphone interface on top of the vehicle’s native software, Android Automotive OS runs in the vehicle itself. That allows it deep connections with things like engine status, battery charge level, and more.

What it may not mean, though, is an end to the now-familiar SYNC design we’ve seen in recent Ford vehicles. “We still see SYNC as a strong differentiator, it’s in the latest version of the F-150, our Bronco, our Mach-E, and customers will still be able to experience it there,” David McClelland, vice president of Strategy and Partnerships at Ford, says. However, from calendar year 2023 we’ll see the transition to Android across all vehicles, with the automaker expecting it across all countries apart from China. “You’ll see much more OTA. The customer’s experience will get better over the lifetime of the vehicle.”

Manufacturers using Android Automotive OS can customize its UI, to match the rest of their cabin aesthetic. The end result could be an interface that looks like what you’d find in, say, the new Mustang Mach-E electric crossover, but with a completely different – and more flexible – OS behind it. For now, Ford isn’t giving details – beyond McClelland saying the experience will be “uniquely Ford and Lincoln” – though it is confirming that things like Apple CarPlay and Ford Smart Device Link (SDL) will continue to be supported even after the Android transition, as will Alexa integration.

Certainly, the pandemic has accelerated a shift in buying patterns for new and used vehicles. For a start we’ve seen the rise of services like Carvana – pushing an app-based research, financing, and ordering process with cars and SUVs delivered rather than provided from a central dealership – with some automakers experimenting with on-demand test drives and similar. All the same, attempts to shift drivers to a subscription model have been less effective, with several automakers quietly scaling back or ending altogether their attempts to circumnavigate leases and financing with an all-in single payment and a flexible loan term.

It’ll all be powered by the Google Cloud, with lashings of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and data analytics. Ford says it hopes to offer new cloud-based services to owners with more personalization, but also to use the technology internally, helping speed up product development, along with manufacturing and supply chain management. It also sees potential for vision AI, to improve employee training and boost manufacturing equipment reliability.

That combination of data could also make communicating between Ford, the vehicle, and the owner more effective, it’s suggested. For example, Ford is looking at how connected cars and the cloud could help “fast track” things like real-time maintenance requests, or even trade-in alerts.

It’s not the first automaker and big tech hook-up we’ve seen in recent months, mind. Back in mid-January, Microsoft announced a deal with Cruise AV – General Motors’ autonomous car company – to make Azure its cloud and edge computing preferred platform. Microsoft also took part in a new $2 billion funding round for Cruise, along with Honda, GM, and other investors.

Cloud and edge computing have particular relevance for driverless vehicles, which can tap into collaborative learning shared by all of the self-driving models. At the same time, by pushing some of the processing to the edge, where large quantities of data can be filtered first, it can also make for a more manageable use of bandwidth where the alternative is pushing all the raw data to the primary cloud for processing in one place.

“The ability for us to have a more intimate relationship with the customer because of their behavior in the vehicle will make, for example, the online purchasing experience much more personalized,” Ford’s McClelland says, “and their interaction with the dealerships much more personalized.”

The study was conducted by Marin Software, extrapolated from billions of dollars of PPC budgets. Wes MacLaggan, SVP of Marketing at Marin Software offered this insight:

“While Google and Facebook continue to be the most prominent channels for digital ad spend, we’re now seeing more and more early adopters experimenting with Amazon’s ad offerings…”

Of the billions of dollars of ad spend researched, Google Shopping Ads represented about 27% of the Google Ad spend in US Dollars. Although it fell to 24% during the fourth quarter it regained in the following quarter, essentially staying flat.

Amazon offers Headline Shopping Ads and Sponsored Product Ads. Headline Shopping Ads are more prominent, showing at the very top of the search results. They received a significantly higher CTR of 2.68% versus 0.49% for the Sponsored Product Ads (SPA), yet the SPA represented nearly 80% of the ad spend.

“Amazon searchers are typically much further along in the purchasing path, and are already in the mindset of wanting to purchase a product. Customer searches tend to be much more specific, and product focused. In Google, customers typically are still in the browsing stages, and wanting to either learn about products, or searching product categories. With customer’s search intentions differing greatly in Amazon vs. Google, it causes your PPC strategies to be much different as well.”

He then elaborated and explained that the Return On Advertising Spend (ROAS) is dramatically better on Amazon. And not just on your own brand name, but across the board on keyword phrases and competitor brand names.

The benefit of the higher ROAS is, according to Mark Jackson of Vizion Interactive:

“This allows your ability to boost incremental sales much higher than in Google.”

Mark Jackson of Vizion Interactive offered this insight:

“In Amazon, customer’s searches are much more specific, causing broader terms to be less utilized (and less expensive). This ends up having a direct effect on the size of budgets you can push in Amazon vs. Google.”

Google Joins The Fight Against Passwords By Enabling Passkeys

The passwordless future is slowly becoming a reality. This week, Google announced that you can now log into your Google account with just a passkey. It’s a huge milestone in what promises to be the incredibly long, awkward move away from using passwords for security. 

In case you haven’t heard yet, passwords are terrible. People pick awful passwords to begin with, find them really hard to remember, and then don’t even use them properly. When someone gets hacked, that may just involve someone using (or reusing) a really bad password or accidentally giving it to a scammer. To try to solve these difficult problems, an industry group—including Apple, Google, and Microsoft—called the FIDO Alliance developed a system called passkeys. 

Passkeys are built using what’s called the WebAuthentication (or WebAuthn) standard and public-key cryptography. It’s similar to how end-to-end encrypted messaging apps work. Instead of you creating a password, your device generates a unique pair of mathematically related keys. One of them, the public key, is stored by the service on its server. The other, the private key, is kept securely on your device, ideally locked behind your biometric data (like your fingerprint or face scan), though the system also supports PINs.

Because the keys are mathematically related, the website or app can get your device to verify that you have the matching private key and issue a one-time login without ever actually knowing what your private key is. This means that account details can’t be stolen or phished and, since you don’t have to remember anything, logging in is simple. 

Take Google’s recent implementation. Once you’ve set up a passkey, you will be able to log into your Google account just by entering your email address and scanning your fingerprint or face. It feels similar to how built-in password managers work, though without any password in the mix. 

Of course, passkeys are still a work in progress, and implementations are inconsistent. As ArsTechnica points out, passkeys currently sync using your operating system ecosystem. Right now, if you exclusively use Apple devices, things are pretty okay. Your passkeys will sync between your iPhone, iPad, and Mac using iCloud. For everyone else though, they’re a mess. If you create a passkey on your Android smartphone, it will sync to your other Android devices, but not your Windows computer or even your Chrome browser. There are workarounds using tools like QR codes, but it’s a far cry from the easy password-sharing built into most browsers.

Also, passkeys aren’t very widely supported yet. Different operating systems support them to various degrees and there currently are just 41 apps and services that allow you to use them to login. Google joining the list is a huge deal, in part because of how many services rely on Sign In With Google.

Password managers have become a good tool for managing complex, unique passwords across different devices and operating systems. These same password managers, like Dashlane and 1Password, are working to solve the syncing issues currently baked into passkeys. In a statement to PopSci, 1Password CEO Jeff Shiner said, “Passkeys are the first authentication method that removes human error—delivering security and ease of use… In order to be widely adopted though, users need the ability to choose where and when they want to use passkeys so they can easily switch between ecosystems… This is a tipping point for passkeys and making the online world safe.”
