Suggested March 2024 5 Reasons Why You Should Buy A Mechanical Keyboard

There you are, sitting on your office chair. Feeling comfortable and good about yourself. Let me tell you something. You are lost. You are a nobody. Why? Because you don’t have a mechanical keyboard in your life! Like some evangelical preacher, I have an idea I need to sell you. That is the glory of the mechanical keyboard. If you accept the mechanical keyboard into your life, you could be experiencing increased comfort, improved productivity, and glory! It will change the way you type forever! Don’t just ask me, there are plenty of fanatics that have forever converted from using cheap, rubber-dome keyboards to high-quality mechanicals. I have made a short list of five reasons why you should switch to a mechanical keyboard. I have faith that you will see the light.

The second reason why you need to switch to a mechanical keyboard is ergonomics. Mechanical keyboards generally have higher quality keycaps which are rounded to let your fingers rest on them more comfortably. Traditional laptop keys, with the exception of Lenovo’s, are flat. Flat keys are good for space-saving designs but you not only lose precision, but also comfort. I find flat keys uncomfortable to type on for long periods because I have to hit them “head on” in order not to make an error. Also, it is very easy to hit these keycaps on the corners which will cause your fingers to slip and mis-type. If you hit the corner of a keycap on a mechanical keyboard, you still have a good chance of registering the input. The longer “throw” of mechanical keyboards are also more comfortable for long typing sessions compared to the short engagement point of chicklet-style keyboards. For a long time, I thought the main attribute of an ergonomic keyboard is shape. After using the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic keyboard for 2-3 years and using my Leopold Tenkeyless for about 5 months, I realize that it’s not about the shape. The main reason mechanical keyboards are better is the key switches.

The third benefit is reduced strain. I realize this is closely related to comfort but I felt that this deserved its own section simply because of RSI(Repetitive Strain Injury). We use our computers for hours and some of us do not take RSI seriously. I take good care of my hands. And so should you. For most people, their hands are their livelihood. Hand health is very important if you are a musician, laborer, or athlete. One thing I’ve notice after spending a few months with my mechanical keyboard compared to keyboards of my past is finger pain. I use to get finger pain after prolonged typing on the rubber dome keys. They were all I knew so I didn’t question. It wasn’t until I was in the market for a better keyboard where I found out about mechanical key switches. Subsequently, it wasn’t until I was typing on them for hours until I realized my finger pain was mainly caused by the cheap rubber-dome keyboards. If you are on the computer for hours, or if your profession involves extensive amounts of typing, consider investing on a mechanical keyboard for this very reason. These key switches will reduce finger strain. Your hands will thank you.

The fourth benefit of using a mechanical keyboard is improved speed. A more precise, comfortable keyboard means improved typing speed. I was never a speed typist. Barely being able to type 25 WPM, after a few months of serious training, I can now type 60-70 WPM. Your mileage may vary but you will improve your speed. If not in burst typing, definitely in endurance typing. That’s typing long essays or reports. Wiki has the average typing speed rated at 33 WPM. If you are over this, you are doing very well.

The last and most important reason why you need a mechanical keyboard? They’re fun! That may sound silly to say but after getting one, I now enjoy typing. I like the sound of these Cherry MX browns. Some people like the blues. You can’t go wrong either way. They’re great to type on. Mechanical keyboards have their own unique personalities. From the simple Leopold Tenkeyless to the highly sought after HHKB Pro 2. Typing shouldn’t be a chore. Most people probably won’t be competing on typeracer for leisure, but mechanical keyboards will make you smile. It’s like buying a luxury car. Sure, you don’t NEED leather heated seat with power everything but if you can afford it, why not treat yourself? Especially a tool that you will spend years using. Once you punch the keys, you will see the light

5 Reasons Why Google Will Buy Youtube

Update: Google did, in fact, purchase Youtube for 1.65 billion dollars in October of 2006.

Sure, the internet, newspapers, and blogosphere have been buzzing all weekend about the rumor of the possible acquisition of YouTube by Google for $1.6 Billion. And yes, once a large company does acquire YouTube, the end result will more than likely be the headache of copyright lawsuits from all of the content creating studios who are tired of having their works TiVo’d and uploading to YouTube and other online video storage houses almost instantly.

And what better company to handle such legal matters than Google, right? With their experience in copyright law as it pertains to the scanning and uploading of protected materials, one might imagine that Google would acquire YouTube just to keep their legal team busy for the next two or three years.

Why Will Google Buy?

But why, why acquire YouTube? Doesn’t Google already have Google Video? Why not build upon Google Video and wait for someone else to fall into the YouTube acquisition trap?

The reasons why do run a many and are difficult to be pinpointed in one simple statement, so here’s a rundown of reasons Google would pay $1.6 Billion for YouTube.

1) Popularity

YouTube is the 10th most popular online destination according to Alexa and if you don’t trust Alexa information, its also ranked as the third most popular steaming video site by comScore Media Metrix and #1 visited online video site according to Hitwise.

Google Video is no where near the top online video site, at this moment, and hovers among MSN and Yahoo among the other online dinosaur fossils according to the Hitwise rankings:

August Hitwise data reflects the following in terms of rankings (based on share of visits):

* MSN Video: 5.92%

Additionally, in September, YouTube enjoyed a market share of visits 4 times greater than Google Video.

2) Not making the same mistake twice

Google made a $610 million mistake this year by not acquiring MySpace when they had the chance. Instead News Corp’s Fox Interactive bought MySpace for the bargain price of $580 as MySpace’s parent company was looking to sell fast in order to avoid lawsuits (over spamming, not copyrights).

Greg Sterling has more:

Rupert Murdoch famously claimed that Google could have purchased MySpace for half of the $580 million he paid for it but the search engine passed — if he’s to be believed. Assume, however, he’s telling the truth and that Google miscalculated badly in passing on MySpace. They then went on to do the $900 million ad deal with News Corp./Fox.

They wouldn’t have had to make those sorts of pricey commitments had they bought the social networking site for the $290 million and owned all that traffic themselves.

Is Google’s reported pursuit of YouTube then an implied “mea culpa” of sorts and a recognition, informed by hindsight, that the company can’t let another similar opportunity pass?

3) Community

YouTube enjoys a much more active, enthusiastic and loyal following than any video service which has been launched by a search engine company, even more active in terms of uploading and sharing by netizens than Yahoo Video.

Charlene Li of Forrester Research uses an interesting and simple comparison to understand the differences between the YouTube and Google Video communities.

Compare the Extreme Diet Coke and Mentos Experiment Video on YouTube and Google Video.

This search for Diet Coke Mentos on YouTube results in 3051 videos while the same search on Google Video delivers only 631.

4) Usability & Stickiness

This kind of falls into the classification of popularity, but users like YouTube more than they do Google Video. They stick around and watch more content on YouTube, while at Google Video they don’t seem to stick around quite as long.

Hitwise says that “YouTube’s average session time is double that of Google Video’s, at 18 minutes 33 seconds in the month of September versus 9 minutes 9 seconds for Google Video. YouTube is just plain sticky compared to Google Video.”

5) Advertising and Money

Throw community, popularity, and stickiness to the side for now and let’s get down to the nitty-gritty. Purchasing YouTube at the price of $1.6 Billion would not be a crazy investment for Google.

If YouTube serves 100 million videos a day, that’s 365,000,000,000 a year… or roughly 3.65 cents per video. If anyone can turn a profit off of YouTube, it’s Google and in this case, given the users, popularity, and traction a YouTube buyout would give Google, it would make more sense for the company to obtain 100% of YouTube AdWords revenue than 20% or 30% of it.

Especially with the Google Video Ads program in the works by Google AdWords.

But there are many other social features shown in the same Google search to provide better results to users.

Search engine optimization is not only optimizing your title, meta description and content. Improving the brand popularity, increasing the trust and reaching out the users quickly will also affect traffic to your site and in turns the SEO. In this article let us explore how social media can affect the SEO of your site.

Social media makes your brand popular

Social profiles are shown in search results

Rating and reviews increase trust of the users

Social discussions and showcasing improve the SEO

Social sites are search engines themselves

1. Make Your Brand Popular

The first step in entering into the social world is to have profiles on popular networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, etc. These profiles are the easy way for a new websites to grow the brand popularity.

Most of the webmasters are individual site owners without much investment plans. In this case it is impossible to rank top on search results for a new websites. It will take considerable time for your site to appear in searches and get traffic. Till that time, it is good idea to make use of the social networking to get the initial boost. Later once the site gets established, you will start getting the organic traffic gradually. By that time you will have a strong brand popularity with the help of social media sites.

2. Social Profiles are Shown in Searches

Google will show the results from Twitter and Facebook profiles on top of the search results. Below is how the Twitter tweets will look in Google:

Especially when you have a niche site, more possibilities are there that Google will show your social feeds.

3. Ratings and Reviews 4. Social Discussions and Showcasing

When you have large number of followers, they will try to like, share and clarify the questions on the social profiles. New users reading the responses will start trusting you since they will believe you are a real human. Establishing this trust is very important to run a site in long term and social media will help to do that for free.

Nowadays, you can’t see a website without having social sharing options and showing the like and shares. Having more followers, shares and likes are indications for high trust from users. Trusted users will spend more time on your site for reading the content or for purchasing items. This will improve the bounce rate of your site thus improving the SEO factor.

5. Social Media Sites are Search Engines

All social media sites are search engines themselves. For example, users tend to search videos within YouTube search and get the relevant videos. If you have a good video content, it will be an opportunity to link your site and get quality traffic.

Wrap Up…

The first page on Google search is always filled with relevant results from social sites. So social profiles for your site are much needed with good reputation and reviews. It is also a risky to only rely on Google to get traffic to your site. Having decent social followers will help you to get social traffic.

In future these social search engines may compete with Google search. In such case, strong social profiles will become part of the search engine optimization process by default.

12 Reasons Why You Should Upgrade To Windows 11

Windows 11 is gaining popularity. Most new Windows laptops and tablet PCs come with Windows 11 preinstalled, and it is becoming rarer to install Windows 10 on a new device. Still the question remains what tangible reasons do you have to upgrade to it compared to Windows 10? We answer that question by running you through all the best new features Windows 11 offers.

1. Appearance

The redesigned taskbar comes with centered icons.

There is a heavy focus on glass-like transparency and a layered fading of colors.

The menus look genuinely inviting, especially if you’re used to aesthetically pleasing menu icons from other operating systems.

The taskbar, applications and file explorer windows subtly change their appearance with any desktop background of your choice.

A new Widgets menu with news, notifications, and other alerts such as weather details.

Not a fan of the latest Start menu? No problem: it’s very easy to move it to the left just like Windows 10.

2. Snap Layouts

Snap has been a core feature of Windows since Windows 7 but hasn’t gone through very many changes until now. Pre-set and customizable Snap layouts have been added to the Snap feature in Windows 11, allowing up to six different types of window layouts (depending on your maximum screen resolution) to be easily accessible at a given time.

It’s just so easy, fast, and intuitive to snap your mouse cursor and position all your open windows and tabs. For those of you using a touchscreen PC, just snap with your fingers!

3. Snap Groups

In addition to the new preset and customizable Snap layouts, Snap Groups have been added. Snap Groups are used to save specific layouts of specific applications. For instance, if you need to have your Personalization Settings on one quarter of the screen and browser tabs on the other, and keep two snap windows open for other activities, a Snap Group would remember all this information for you. You can return to it anytime.

Getting in and out of the Snap Layouts and Groups is a breeze. It doesn’t consume your valuable time as you don’t have to remember those window configurations: your desktop arranges everything neatly like a concierge.

4. Multiple Desktops

Previously, multiple desktops in Windows all had to share the same background, barring the use of third-party programs. Windows 11 will have desktops with individual backgrounds built into the operating system, allowing for that extra level of customization.

5. File Explorer Tabs

No need to struggle with multiple open windows. From version 22H2 onwards, Windows 11 has introduced tabbed browsing in its File Explorer windows. This allows you to create as many tabs as you want within the same window, scroll through each one horizontally, copy-paste files and folders from one tab to the next, and create tab groups.

The best part is using so many tabs does not impact your RAM or CPU consumption. Even when multiple tabs are open, the system feels lightweight.

6. File Explorer Command Bar

You can also rotate the images within the File Explorer window, and create new files, folders, Word documents, and PowerPoint presentations from the “New” dropdown button.

7. Microsoft Teams Integration

The realities of a post-pandemic world have made good video-conferencing software more important than ever. Microsoft Teams has done well in this regard, and it’s integrated directly into Windows 11.

8. Gaming Performance Enhancements

Gamers will rejoice as Windows 11 supports some of the latest gaming feature enhancements which are at its best ever. The Xbox Gaming pass and its library features closely integrate with the PC experience. The next generation of Microsoft Games are more likely to be designed for the PC compared to other devices. As a result, you get the desired speeds with this version.

9. DirectX 12 Ultimate Support

DirectX 12 Ultimate is where all of the next-generation gaming features are going to be on Windows, especially for games using features like real-time ray-tracing and mesh shading. If you want the highest graphics settings and in-game framerate, having DirectX 12 Ultimate will be a necessity for Windows gamers moving forward.

While you can certainly find DirectX 12 support in certain Windows 10 laptops, Windows 11 supports DirectX 12 Ultimate as a minimum spec requirement.

10. HDR Video Streaming and Auto HDR Feature

A good HDR setting can add quite a lot to a game, but unfortunately, it isn’t natively supported by all games. This makes sense since HDR is somewhat complex. With Windows 11, Microsoft has taken Xbox’s Auto HDR technology and applied it to all DirectX 11 (or newer) games running on the operating system.

Windows 11 supports HDR Video Streaming out of the box and allows using an Auto HDR option which can be turned on for supported devices. At least for people with HDR TVs and HDR monitors, this will make quite a few games look better than ever with no extra work needed from the developers.

11. DirectStorage Support

Everyone knows a Solid-State Drive (SSD) makes your PC faster, but most modern games aren’t made to utilize all that extra speed. With the PS5 and Xbox Series consoles being built on top of NVMe SSDs as a baseline, games are being made with that level of storage speed in mind, greatly increasing the possibilities. DirectStorage brings that technology to Windows but is only going to be available on Windows 11. You need at least 1 TB NVMe SSD to get this benefit.

Even with Windows 11, running an SSD requires many precautions such as updating the SSD firmware, enabling AHCI and TRIM, keeping DeFrag On, and enabling High Performance Power options.

12. Enhanced Hardware Security

Windows 11 offers a more enhanced hardware security packaging than any of its predecessors. Apart from the regular options seen in Windows Security, there are three security features that help protect your device against remote threats:

Core isolation: this is a virtualization-based security with memory integrity On, protecting your device from malicious codes.

Trusted Platform Module (TPM): all Windows 11 devices have TPM module 2.0 in the security processor, with the highest cryptographic protection.

Secure boot: secure boot is enabled as a default in Windows 11

The first and most obvious incentive for users to upgrade to Windows 11 is to stay up to date, especially in today’s era of ransomware attacks. Windows 11 will be the first to get all the major security updates and fixes that could impact users of previous versions of Windows.

Frequently Asked Questions Can Windows 10 users get Windows 11 for free?

Yes, as of 2023, all Windows 10 users qualify for a free upgrade to Windows 11 provided their device meets the minimum requirements of hardware and software. It includes TPM 2.0 and higher, a PC Health Check, and other graphics and security tests.

As a general rule, if your Windows 10 device was purchased closer to 2023, it is more likely to qualify for a Windows 11 upgrade than a device purchased around 2024.

Should I upgrade to Windows 11 or buy a new laptop?

If your Windows 10 hardware qualifies for a free Windows 11 upgrade, you should prefer it as it will save you a ton of money. It’s very easy and you just need to spare 24 hours. We have a guided installation manual that covers all the steps.

How long will Windows 10 be supported?

Windows 10 is going to be officially supported by Microsoft till 2025-end. It will continue to receive security updates for another two years after that. It is also possible that Microsoft may extend the deadline in future given the slower rate of adoption for Windows 11, but it is too soon to predict that. Still, if you do not wish to migrate to Windows 11, you can wait a few more years.

5 Reasons Why Startups Should Utilize Crowdsourcing To Reach Success

Every startup aspires to success, but it can occasionally be challenging to know how to get there. In this article, we examine the benefits of crowdsourcing for companies, including how it might assist them in achieving their objectives. Using the crowdsourcing business model, businesses go outside of their organization for unique solutions from big groups of people. Discover the five reasons why startups should use crowdsourcing to succeed, starting from cost savings to delivery speed!

Introduction to Crowdsourcing

The term ‘crowdsourcing’ has gained popularity in recent years as an increasing number of businesses use internet platforms to outsource jobs. But what exactly is crowdsourcing?

The technique of outsourcing tasks or projects to a sizable group of individuals, generally through an internet platform, is known as crowdsourcing. This can be done for several reasons, including lowering labor expenses and having access to a broader talent pool. Startups may make the most of their resources while lowering their expenses and risks by utilizing this collective expertise.

Crowdsourcing also aids businesses in succeeding by enabling them to access a highly diversified talent pool. Unique ideas and solutions can be contributed by people all over the world, which is crucial for any startup seeking to stand out in a crowded industry. Additionally, because of the enormous volume of contributors involved in crowdsourcing initiatives, firms can complete tasks more quickly than if they relied solely on one or two internal staff.

Benefits of Crowdsourcing for Startups

By integrating crowdsourcing into their business practices, startups can get insightful feedback on their goods. They can access a large audience through crowdsourcing and use it to find out what the general public thinks about their business. Additionally, it might help startups locate new customers, peer support, business partners, and funding for their firm. Here are 5 benefits that using crowdsourcing for your startup may bring you

1. Cost Savings 2. Expedited Development Times

In today’s corporate environment, time is money. As a result, many companies are turning to crowdsource to aid in the quicker introduction of their products and services. By harnessing the power of the audience, startups can get the feedback they need to improve their offers and take quick decisions. For business owners, crowdsourcing can also help with cost savings. By employing a worldwide talent pool, startups can find cost-effective solutions to their development challenges. Companies can emerge with less initial investment thanks to platforms for crowdsourcing ideas.

3. Increased Talent Pool Availability 4. Quality Control and Innovative Ideas 5. Increased Brand Visibility and Reputation

The repute and exposure of startup brands can be enhanced through crowdsourcing. This is so that many individuals may spread the word about your campaign and give your company more visibility. The reputation of your startup will be enhanced by a successful crowdsourcing initiative. Getting feedback from your target market by using crowdsourcing is a great strategy. Thanks to your participation, you may develop your good or service and comprehend your customers better.

How to Utilize Crowdsourcing Effectively?

Although there are numerous efficient ways to use crowdsourcing, having a clear vision and aim for your objectives is crucial. Without a clear direction, it might be simple to get lost in crowdsourcing’s potential sea of thoughts and opinions. Here are some ways how you can use crowdsourcing efficiently:

Clear definition of objectives − You must clearly define your project goals and be as explicit as you can about accomplishment hopes through crowdsourcing.

Researching the topic well − You can avail of the services of crowdsourcing through a wide variety of platforms and websites worldwide. You must look for one that best fits your requirements and price range. Researching through different websites is important to get a clear idea of how you must proceed.

Writing an outstanding project brief − A great brief helps you to attract the correct kind of interest and talent to your project. You must be specific about the assistance and qualifications required while looking for the concerned talents.

Wide publicity of your project − It is easier to find the right fit for your crowdsourcing project when you have a wide range of individuals to reach out to. You can use social media, internet forums, and word-of-mouth marketing to spread the word about your project.

Be open to giving frequent feedback − Once you begin getting submissions for your project, you must respond promptly with constructive feedback. Your feedback can help the independent contractors to operate in the best course of action.

Conclusion

Crowdsourcing is a strong tool for companies that can enable them to succeed, to sum up. It may increase brand exposure, cut expenses, open doors to new markets and customers, and speed up innovation. Additionally, it removes the uncertainty associated with locating skilled personnel and allows businesses the chance to interact with specialists on their initiatives. With all these benefits available, there aren’t many reasons why startup businesses shouldn’t think about incorporating crowdsourcing into their company plan.

40+ Macos Keyboard Shortcuts You Should Know

You probably use your computer every day without giving it a second thought, but there are lots of shortcuts that you could be using to get the most out of your time. Here are over 40 keyboard shortcuts you should be using in macOS.

Video: 40+ macOS shortcuts you need to know

Copy, paste, & more

To start off with the most common shortcuts you’re probably already familiar with: the copy and paste commands. Of course, Command + C will copy, and Command + V will paste. But you can also hit Command + X to cut, so you can paste the text where you want and the original text will be removed. Also, a better way to paste in many cases is with Command + Option + Shift + V. That pastes the original text but drops any of the formatting, like the size, font, or color. This is really handy for copying text off a website or somewhere else where the text is really stylized to make sure the text you paste fits in with what’s around it. This paste without formatting command is very likely to take the place of the standard paste command in most cases.

Command + Option + Shift + V: Paste without formatting

Navigating apps Navigation shortcuts in macOS

Document editing in Pages

With those system-wide shortcuts out of the way, let’s cover some important ones for specific apps – starting with Pages. You’re probably already familiar with some basic formatting shortcuts, such as Command + B to bold text, Command + I to italicize text,  and Command + U to underline text. You can also make use of the built in dictionary by selecting a word and hitting Control + Command + D, and it will pop up a window with the dictionary definition and synonyms – pretty handy if your find yourself repeating the same words too often. And if you’re repeating those words too often, just hit Command + F and type what you’re looking for to find all the instances of that word in your document.

Once you’ve finished your writing and you want to back through it and find misspelled words, you don’t have to do it manually – just hit Command + Semicolon, which will bring you to the first misspelled word in the document. Hitting Command + Semicolon again will move the selection to the next word, and so on, cycling through all misspelled words. This last one is handy in Pages, but also in other apps, as it brings up the Character Viewer, where you can access all your emoji. When MacBooks lost the Touch Bar it was the easy access to emojis that I missed most, but hitting Control + Command + Space brings up that Character Viewer, so you can use emoji to your heart’s content.

Pages shortcuts in macOS

Web-browsing and Safari tips

Within Safari, there are several options for navigating backwards and forwards through webpages. Of course, you have the arrows in the upper left corner, but you can also just use Command + Left Arrow to go back a page, or Command + Right Arrow to go forward a page. Even easier than that, though – if you have a trackpad, you can just swipe to the right with two fingers to go back a page, or swipe to the left with two fingers to go forward a page.

Command + K: Show Connect to Server window

Shift + Command + K: Open Network window

Shift + Command + R: Open AirDrop window

Shift + Command + C: Open Computer window

Shift + Command + D Open Desktop

Shift + Command + U: Open Utilities

Better volume control

One final shortcut you should know isn’t application specific – it’s related to your computer’s volume. Normally, you just press the volume keys up or down to change the volume to your liking – but what if you’re wearing headphones, or want some extra granular control over exactly how loud your computers sound is? Well, if you just hold Option + Shift, and then hit the Volume key, you’ll notice that the bar moves in much smaller increments. This one isn’t something I use all the time, but it does come in handy once in a while!
