2024 Toyota RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid packs 302hp and 39 mile EV range

Toyota has a new plug-in hybrid, the 2023 Toyota RAV4 Prime, and it’s not only promising to be the automaker’s most fuel-efficient RAV4, but its most powerful, too. Indeed the new PHEV is actually Toyota’s second-fastest model, period, following the Supra, with 302 horsepower to play with.

It means a 0-60 mph time of 5.8 seconds, Toyota is predicting. Of course, most SUV buyers aren’t picking their truck of choice with drag racing in mind, and so the 2023 RAV4 Prime is also expected to score 90 MPGe in the combined economy test.

All-wheel drive is standard, and a combination of new batteries, new motor-generators, and a new booster converter give the SUV its 83 hp performance bump over the RAV4 Hybrid. That took 7.8 seconds to get to 60 mph, a considerable difference. There’s a 2.5-liter four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle gas engine, which contributes 176 hp of the total figure.

The lithium-ion battery is mounted under the floor, and there’s a new heat pump HVAC system that borrows tech from the Prius Prime. It helps cut down on range-sapping heating and cooling. Overall, Toyota is expecting the 2023 RAV4 Prime to be capable of 39 miles on battery power alone.

Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive uses a separate electric motor for the rear wheels alone. That only kicks in when traction needs demands it, or when you want maximum performance. There’s a Trail mode that can brake a spinning wheel and then send more torque to the grounding wheel, and paddle shifters are optional: they increase the regenerative braking to give the feeling of downshifting into more engine braking.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, with a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alerts with steering assist, lane tracing assistance, road sign assistance, and automatic high-beams. Toyota will offer the SUV in SE and XSE grades, with the XSE adding rear cross traffic braking, and front and rear parking assistance with automatic braking.

The RAV4 Prime SE will get 18-inch painted and machined alloy wheels, a special front grille, and a front lower spoiler. It’ll also have black exterior trim. Inside, there’s an 8-way power driver’s seat, a 7-inch driver display, leather on the steering wheel and gear shifter, blind spot monitoring, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A moonroof, heated steering wheel, heated rear outboard seats, windshield wiper de-icer, and rain-sensing wipers are part of a Weather & Moonroof package.

As for the RAV4 Prime XSE, there’s a two-tone paint scheme, special 19-inch wheels, vertical LED accent lights, and optional adaptive front lighting that can steer the beam into corners. Inside, there’s the paddle-shifters, a moonroof, synthetic leather on the seats, wireless phone charing, ambient lighting, and a larger, 9-inch touchscreen. A Premium Audio upgrade adds navigation and a JBL speaker system, while a Premium Package includes that plus ventilated front seats, a head-up display, 360-degree camera, and more.

The 2023 Toyota RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid will go on sale in summer 2023, the automaker says. Pricing will be confirmed closer to launch.

Amake Wifi Smart Power Plug Review

Have you ever forgotten to unplug something before leaving home or the office and had to go all the way back to do so? It’s a bit aggravating and inconvenient, isn’t it? It’s a good thing we now have all types of smart devices to keep us from making these careless mistakes. One such device is Amake’s WiFi Smart Power Plug.

This single power plug can be plugged into any three-prong outlet and controlled from your Android or iOS device using the e-Control app. It’s smooth sailing once you get the plug setup.

Setting Up the WiFi Smart Power Plug

Once you’ve downloaded the required e-Control app (linked above), you’ll also need to make sure that the device you’re using is connected to your home’s WiFi network.

Note: only 2.4G networks are supported; 5G isn’t supported.

You’ll be prompted to enter your WiFi password so that you can configure the plug. It should only take a few seconds for it to connect.

You will see “SmartPlug” listed, and it should say “Configuration success …” at the top. Now you can select it to set it up. By default, it’s turned off, but you can tap on “OFF” to turn it on. You can also set up timers from here and see the device’s time at the bottom-right. (It should be the same as your home time since it uses your WiFi.)

When you turn it on, the light on the plug turns red. It remains red even when you plug something into it. This lets you know that it’s connected and working properly. The light can also indicate issues, though. For instance, if the light flashes once a second, it means that the configuration failed, and it needs to be done again.

Using the WiFi Smart Power Plug

This is just like any other outlet in your home, so all you have to do is plug something into it to use it. You can keep it on at all times or just whenever you need to.

The best feature of the plug is the timer feature. There are three different types to choose from:

Scheduled Timer – You can choose when the plug will turn on and/or off along with how often to repeat it (once, daily, or the same day(s) each week).

Countdown Timer – This allows you to either set a countdown timer to turn the plug on or off. For instance, you can have it turn off after 2.5 hours so that your phone isn’t overcharged.

Cycled Timer – Here you can set a total period and how long the on and off repeated timers will last. During this period the plug will be turned on during different times. For instance, you can have a lamp turn on and off throughout the day when you’re away so that it looks like someone is at home.

There are a few other features in Settings such as device locking (so that no one else in your network can find the plug), push messages, firmware update, and charging protection. Not much explanation is given for these features, so you are forced to figure things out yourself.

If you ever want to reset the plug, just press and hold the On/Off key in the app until the light on the plug flashes quickly. This is great if you want to give it away to someone else so that they can connect it to their own home network and mobile device.

Final Thoughts

The WiFi Smart Power Plug works great, but you do have to remember that the app only works when connected to your home network. You won’t be able to turn the plug on or off when away from home. That’s where the timers come into play – they can be extremely useful. Even a simple timer to have the plug go off at the same time each day (e.g. the time you leave for work) would be really smart to have enabled.

The plug responds quickly to the app, and I found no delay when tapping on/off. I tried out a scheduled timer and countdown timer and both were right on time. If you need an affordable, basic smart plug, this could be the perfect solution for you. If you’re not very tech-savvy, this would also be great since it doesn’t require much effort, and the simple on/off button is a no-brainer.

Best Uk Homekit Smart Plug: Eve Energy Review

The HomeKit accessory ecosystem is slowly expanding, but there is still a dearth of accessories outside of the United States.

Given what is available, the Eve Energy (US version) is the best choice for UK Apple users who are looking for the best HomeKit smart plug that actually fits in the UK three-prong sockets.

The Eve Energy is set up using the Eve app, but you don’t have to use the Eve app after initial configuration if you don’t want to. Getting started is simple. You just plug the Eve Energy into a socket and the Eve app automatically detects it. You add it to a room and then the accessory shows up in your HomeKit home.

A few years ago, Bluetooth HomeKit accessories were notoriously unreliable when it came to sending commands. The UK HomeKit market doesn’t really have many Wi-Fi-based options, so the Eve Energy is the best option out there. While Wi-Fi accessories are still superior, the experience with Bluetooth HomeKit has definitely improved, and it’s more than good enough. Turning the plug on and off was always fast and responsive in my testing.

Once the accessory is inside the Home app, you can name it and move it to the relevant room.

You just tap on its tile in the Apple Home app to turn the plug on or off, or just ask Siri to do the same.

Set the accessory as a favorite, then you can quickly control all of your most-used accessories, using the Home platter widget in Control Center.

The simplicity of smart plugs is what makes them great. Plug a dumb standing lamp into the Eve Energy, plug the Eve Energy into the wall, and boom — you have a smart light of sorts.

The Apple Home app lets you customize how the plug is presented as an accessory. By default, it will look like a generic power-point switch. However, you can edit the accessory and choose to present it as either a fan or a light. To do this, long-press on the Eve Energy tile, swipe to the settings screen, and tap the “Display As” button.

Using “Display As” also opens up Siri’s understanding to more natural language. By default, you can toggle the plug by asking Siri something like “Turn off the Eve Energy.” But if you set the display mode as a fan, you can speak more naturally, like, “Turn on the fan,” or, “Stop the fan.”

The best part of HomeKit is how you can unify smart home accessories from many different manufacturers inside of one app, Apple Home (or any of the third-party HomeKit apps on the App Store). HomeKit also lets you group these disparate accessories together with smart scenes and automations.

You can easily add the Eve Energy to your “I’m leaving” or “Good night” scene, allowing one command to turn everything off in your home. With iOS 13, the Home app will even suggest these scenes to you when onboarding the accessory, so you can configure this behavior by literally checking the box during setup. Obviously, you can always add new scenes and edit existing ones later.

You can then configure automations to trigger the scenes in response to events like time of day, sunrise/sunset, or when HomeKit detects that a person arrives or leaves.

All of this behavior can be managed from within the Apple Home experience. The Eve app gives you a bit more fine-grained information about power consumption and energy usage.

The app shows current energy consumption, can estimate the costs on your electricity ball, and chart usage over time. Home and Eve sit happily side by side, so you can leave the Eve app in a folder and refer to it occasionally if you are interested in that information.

The main gotcha with this product is just the size of the overall enclosure. The smart plug is relatively large, and its width can be prohibitive in certain places. If you are planning to put in a socket next to other things that are plugged in, there may not be room for both to fit, depending on the outlet. In my case, it would be fine in a wall socket, but it couldn’t slot in alongside other plugs in an extension lead.

Overall, though, the Eve Energy is by far the best choice for UK smart plug solutions. It just works. If you are looking to dive into HomeKit, it’s a great place to start.

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser First Look: Long Live Toyota’S Longstanding Suv

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser First Look: Long Live Toyota’s Longstanding SUV

The venerable Toyota Land Cruiser is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, and what better way to mark this event than by unveiling the all-new tenth-generation model. The 2023 Toyota Land Cruiser is still sitting on a modified body-on-frame chassis developed by combining the J200 Series platform with Toyota’s new GA-F TNGA architecture.

As expected, the result is a 441-pound weight loss over the outgoing J200 Land Cruiser with a lower center of gravity. Toyota also tinkered with the weight distribution while improving the suspension architecture to make the truck more agile and comfortable whether on or off-road.

But alas, the Land Cruiser’s mighty V8 engine bids goodbye in the tenth-generation model. In its place is a twin-turbocharged V6 engine generating 409 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. Other markets will receive a 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged diesel V6 motor generating 304 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque.

Both V6 engines will have a 10-speed automatic transmission driving all four wheels via a full-time four-wheel drivetrain with a two-speed transfer case. Toyota claims other markets will also receive a naturally-aspirated gasoline V6 engine coupled with a six-speed automatic gearbox. Both the engine and transmission are now sitting 1.1-inches lower and 2.8-inches further back to improve the handling and weight distribution.

Underneath, the 2023 Land Cruiser has an updated independent front and live-axle rear suspension. Still, it now has Toyota’s Kinematic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) that disables the anti-roll bars when the going gets tough. The system can also modify the resistance of the roll bars to allow more excellent articulation between the front and rear axles.

Also new in the tenth-generation Land Cruiser is a Multi-Terrain Monitor that uses a camera to help drivers detect obstacles while off-roading. Meanwhile, the new Multi-Terrain Select system automatically engages the proper driving mode based on any given terrain.

Style-wise, you wouldn’t mistake the 2023 Land Cruiser for any other large SUV. The squarish body proportions remain, but it now has a bigger front grille and higher-mounted headlights and taillights. Toyota will be offering the newest Land Cruiser in three different facades, including a GR Sport trim with a blacked-out grille and front bumper.

Inside, the all-new Toyota Land Cruiser has a modern dashboard with a largish infotainment touchscreen display. And unlike the previous generations, it now has third-row seats that fold flat in the floor. Toyota Safety Sense is also standard and includes an updated pre-collision system that detects pedestrians and cyclists during the day and night. It also gets a new Parking Support Brake that recognizes obstacles in the front and back of the vehicle while parking or reversing.

The 2023 Toyota Land Cruiser will go on sale this summer. However, it won’t be available in the U.S. market, making it the first Toyota in 60 years not to make it stateside. But there’s a glimmer of hope as Toyota intends to bring the next-gen Lexus LX based on the 2023 Land Cruiser.
